i asked my dentist and was told that over the counter things (as well as whitening toothpaste) really don't do anything. The only real way to do it is to get the bleeching done. Of course they may just be trying to get me to pony up $300 for the professional bleech trays.

OTC stuff doesnt work very well IMO. By the time (and money spent) you do get good results, you could have spent the same amount at a dentist (and less time) and will get much more dramatic results.

I used the colgate whitening and to my surprise the ygot nice and white...took a while like..2-3 weeks...but the final results are good and if you keep using that toothpaste your teeth will remain white.

The only over-the-counter bleaching system that does anything is Crest White Strips (and this IS according to my dentist). After using them, the results should last about 6 months. The "paint-on" gels don't do anything because your saliva gets rid of the stuff in the first 5 min. Whitening toothpaste/ chewing gum does help a little to some degree over time.

It should be noted that if your teeth are not very straight and aligned to begin with, these might not work as well for uniform whitening.

so true...it wont cover all of your teeth...so how about lay low on the coffee if you drink it alot or some cigs if you smoke alot..and try brushing 3 times a day.

I agree. I tried them and they work. But don't expect to get extremely bright white teeth like the commercials would have you think. I don't think they're really worth it unless you have badly stained teeth from coffee or tobacco.

think consumer reports found that the gel paste ones worth the best. and yes toothpastes are worthless. they polish surface stains..like any toothpaste does. so its a bs claim

so it's worth the $30 for the crest white strips, they are guaranteed.

I agree. They worked quite well for me.

Brushing your teeth with baking soda and peroxide once a week helped alot also.

I've used those crest white strips... they worked ok, nothing too awesome. they were a hassle to put on and take off. I've found that the colgate simply white - night has worked the best for me. Those are 10-12 dollars, wouldn't hurt to try.

I dont think it'll work that well...I posted a similar thread last week about my yellow teeth and most people ssay it would be better if you go in and get your teeth bleached by the dentist then maintain your teeth. So far i've been using Colgate whitening tooth paste with baking soda in it and I can see slight reduction in yellowness.
