OVer heating 1.8 p4

Just wondering what the temp for a 1.8 p4 with retail HS fan? I'm getting 42 C' idle. I've had it VC'd up to 2.6 at one time but ran into heat problems so backed it back down. Now all she's got is 1.8, anything over and it becomes way unstable. Any thoughts? I may have realy shorten the life span of my northy!

42°C at idle is a little hotter than average but is perfectly OK. You will not shorten the lifespan of a Northwood with excessive heat because the chip will automatically throttle itself back if it gets too hot. This happens around 70°C. What seems to shorten the life of a Northwood is excessive core voltage (over 1.75V for extended periods of time).
