Hey Hawkeye, scans aren't posted on the idealwiz site, but thanks for all the early notices.

As a sidenote, TDK CD-R's are decent, yes?

TDK CD-Rs seem to work okay. I got a spindle of them from CompUSA, and, so far, only one of them gave me trouble (in a Plextor UltraPlex 40X SCSI CD-ROM). None of them have given me trouble in the CD-RW that burned them (cheap EIDE Teac 8x8x32).

If they are made in USA or Japan, then a definite yes. Otherwise, if they are made in Taiwan (Ritek), then I personally would only use them for non-important stuff (and I got two such TDK spindles for that). I wouldn't use them to store important data (e.g. data I want to read, say a year from now). YMMV.

Stingygrrl:

A "winmodem" uses the CPU to do almost all of the computational work. These cards contain little more than a telephone interface. I believe "winmodem" is a registered trademark of US Robotics which means there are other "software modems" that are not called "winmodems" but act the same way. The easiest way to tell is to look at the minimum hw requirements. Typically, a "software modem"/"winmodem" will need at least a 90 or 133 MHz Pentium. At that speed, don't expect to do anything while the modem is in use.

Hardware modems contain onboard DSPs that do the work. An external serial port modem is an example. They cost more than software modems, but can be used in just about any computer. For example, I have a so-called MacIntosh US Robotics external modem that works just fine under Windows. System requirements for a hardware modem is lot less than a software modem. Typically, the box may ask for a 486 CPU.

Given the choice, I'd go with an external modem for ease-of-everything; I'd use an internal hardware modem if I'm out of serial ports; and I'd use a software modem only for machines I don't use often.

<< What's the difference between a winmodem and a regular modem? Is this one of those soft modems? Shld we avoid it? (Win 98SE)
Thanks for the hard work posting!!

Also, what's up with the potting soil? Is that for real?
>>

Avoid Winmodems. Regular modems are becoming hard to find but basically regular modems (sometimes called hardware modems) are self contained modems where as Winmodems use your CPU power to do some of the work and therefore slow down your whole system. Winmodems are definately a step back, however they are very cheap. Friends don't let friends buy winmodems.

..One of the best things I ever bought was a Ups and I see CC has a pretty good one for 30 after rebates..most usefull thing I ever bought outside of printer and scanner..lights blink or go out and I just keep trucking a long,I got a small ups,if the lights don,t come on after 3-4 mins. I start shutting down..those things react fast, lights blink your computer and moniter don,t miss a beat..lota people don,t know that...If I was starting out I think I,d buy that before a Cd/Rw even...and you got a surge protector too..
