Outspoken Putin Critic Shot Dead in Moscow

From The Washington Post

"The first thing that comes to mind is that Anna was killed for her professional activities. We don't see any other motive for this terrible crime," said Vitaly Yaroshevsky, a deputy editor of the newspaper where Politkovskaya worked.

Politkovskaya was a fierce critic of Putin, whom she accused of stifling freedom and failing to shake off his past as a KGB agent.

"I dislike him for ... his cynicism, for his racism, for his lies ... for the massacre of the innocents which went on throughout his first term as president," she wrote in her book "Putin's Russia" which was published overseas but not in Russia.

Her death came on the day Putin turned 54.

A birthday present for KGB man Putin 😉

Also, German journalists killed in Afghanistan:

Washington Post Again

Two German journalists working for the country's national broadcaster and traveling on their own through northern Afghanistan were killed by gunmen Saturday, the first foreign journalists murdered here since late 2001.

I may make a thread that specifically deals with jounalists' deaths and related issues.

Man that really sucks. I don't know much about Russia these days... what is the government and civil rights like these days?

you gotta admit...Putins style roxs!!!!

Just think what would happen if GWB adopted Putin`s style of dealing with critics..order more body bags Cheney......lolol

How moral for you to laugh about the murder of someone, Jedi. Can you change that icon, as an American I'm ashamed to see it on a post like that.

Trevelyan, I hear that there's a lot of poverty remaining, following the wild-west like acquisition of resources by private semi-criminal groups in the 90's, and that Putin has been moving to a more and more authoritarian government.

So what kind of government is it? Was Putin and elected and will he be replaced?

Sorry for my ignorance.

Yeltsin famously resigned on December 31st, 1999, and Putin, as prime minister, became acting president. Elections were supposed to be held in the fall of 2000, but Putin had them held earlier in March, which gave him a huge advantage. Terms are five years. In 2004 he won his second term. It was considered "free and fair" by international observers but most of the TV channels which carried campaign ads were state-owned, and very pro-Putin. His term will expire in 2009. Presidents in Russia are allowed two terms max, but there was a movement recently to allow for three terms. I don't recall if Putin was really behind it, or just some of his supporters and he went along with it. The measure failed so he will not be eligible for further terms.

It will be interesting indeed to see what Putin does. Obviously a man of great power, I can't see him simply giving away power. Perhaps a measure for a third term will eventually pass 😉 But more realistically - the next man in line will come from the same party with the same goals and draw on Putin as an advisor.
Democracy, schma-mocracy - its clear no real democracy truly exists in this world so pseudo styles will be all we get

who was laughing?? The statement was and still is Putin rox`s.....
His way of dealing with critics has been tried and tested throughout time....

I abhor murder but you must admit...his way of dealing with critic`s is effective...abeit morally wrong!

In the US and other parts of the world, many people only hear about the wrong-doings in Russia by reports of the killing of their journalists. I suppose this wakes up other journalists more than other issues. But at least it does.

I don't need to admit it was effective; I think you have warped morals to use that measurement of the issue. Even on that measure, these things can backfire terribly - when Marcos shot Aquino, the country turned and overthrew him.

Sadly it seems the Russian people have seen the bad side of "freedom" i.e. thieves and corruption with rampant crime lords and such, but have not really seen the good side. Hard to tell if anything is going to change, fighting the crime lords will take someone with a LOT of balls and don't know if that person exists.

well, the good side use to be that journalist were free from getting murdered.... however, it now looks like its backs to the good old days of the KGB... missing people, political murders, etc... hope things improve.. but not to optimistic..

Mafia activty runs rampent in Russia as there are now many new Millionaires and very many poor people. That wage gap is huge from the haves and have nots and corruption and mafia activity is huge there!

Govt. Controls TV and Newspapers so decent from what the Govt. wants is very few and far between. This is the same Govt. that tried to kill/poison Viktor Yushchenko when he was running for President of Ukraine because he apposed Putin and Russia policies.

Its really a sad state of affairs whats going on in this corrupt country.

Heh, if people think GWB is bad news in Iraq/Afghanistan, wait for Putin to get complete control of Russia and see what happens to Georgia and Chechnya.

The longer Putin stays in power, the more and more Russia comes closer to the days of the Soviet Empire, and drifts farther and farther from the free Society that could have been created. And sadly, no one around here seems to realize that, because they're afraid of "damaging relations."

So what should the US do about it?

It should be interesting to see what happens in 2009, and how the future US President responds to it.

last I checked iraq wasn't part of the union.

chechnya is part of russia.

edit: and as for the OP.. If Putin wanted her dead, I'm sure she would have dissappeared, rather than have been found shot.
