I have a nice pair of dress shoes I really like. They're broken in, feel great, and look like new still.

however, the outsole itself is wearing then. In some spots the tread is completely worn off and I think If I wear these everyday for a month they'll be finished. Is there anything I can spray on it to add a layer in order to slow things down? I doubt I'd pay money to have new outsoles put on, but if there's some kind of acrylic/sealant/rubber spray I can put on there to post pone things, I'd like to.

Shoe Goo II. It comes in a tube, and you squeeze it on like glue. Creating dams with tape, you can build up worn sole sections.

The key to keeping shoes new is... drum roll... Buy more shoes.

I've read that buying two pair, and alternating days makes them last longer(more than twice as long smart ass :^P ). I never wanted to spend the money to try.

you have never had more than one pair of shoes at a time? How is that possible?

I was thinking more specifically work boots. I have a bunch of shoes, but they mostly sit in the closet. I wear one pair at a time until they wear out, then start on another pair. I wear boots, and boat shoes almost exclusively. I occasionally wear sandals in the summer.

I'm already doing that. I've got like 6 pairs of shoes for daily business casual, some of them I've had for years. I like the shoes I have, and would be happy if I could keep them going. All in all I have about 20 pairs of shoes. Nothing crazy. Half I barely ever wear.

Just take them to a cobbler.

This $15-25.

While at it, have them put on plastic taps for the heels and toes. That is what gets worn down first and are only $3 a pop.

Old military trick for dress shoes.

Lost art. I looked for a guy to fix some dress shoes I had made for me by a master shoe smith when I lived in Vienna. Finally found a Spanish lady trough a friend that has been fixing shoes for what looks like 50 years.

A proper resole could cost 100 bucks if you want something molded

Maybe I'm just old, but when I hear 'dress shoes' I think leather soles. But you mentioned tread, so I guess you mean something molded.
Shoe Goo is great stuff. I've used it to glue loose parts and to build up worn heels. Really wears well. But I can't see using it to build up the entire sole. That would be slippery.
If the shoe is nice enough, it's worth getting it resoled. If not, buy two new pairs. Keep the old pair in the rotation until they die.

Rubber outsole? Perhaps invest in dress shoes with leather soles.

In any case, a cobbler can probably put a Topy or Vibram sole on it.

Heh.. nice pair.. not expensive pair. They were like $50 on clearance at Kohls. It's a simple slipper'esqu design. But they look great with most of the stuff I wear. The actual shoe itself is in perfect condition except for the outsole, which is wearing down fast.
