Here's Kemp, trying to keep people of color from voting in the Georgia election, with his trying to deny 53,000 people from voting (70% of them African Americans)
https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/12/politics/georgia-voter-lawsuit-brian-kemp/index.html

He's now using language used by segregationists in the civil rights era.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/outside-...urfaces-georgia-governors-race-185322290.html

“Despite what you hear or read, the numbers are clear. While outside agitators disparage this office and falsely attack us, we have kept our heads down and remained focused on ensuring secure, accessible, and fair elections for all voters,” Kemp said in a statement through his state office website.

"“Brian Kemp refers to his critics as ‘outside agitators.’ You can’t make this stuff up!” tweeted Joseph Crespino, professor of 20th century U.S. history and chair of the history department at Emory University in Atlanta."

That's exactly the language of the segregationists from many decades ago when used to describe the people that were pushing for civil rights in the south.

From the article:
"One of Georgia’s most famous white supremacists, the late Gov. Lester Maddox, often used the term “agitators” to dismiss those who protested his refusal to serve three African-American Georgia Tech students at his restaurant in Atlanta. Maddox’s account of the 1964 confrontation, after the enactment of the federal Civil Rights Act, included multiple reference to “agitators.”"

Make America White Again

Remember to vote on Nov 6th, 2018

The part of the Voting Rights Act that was stripped out by the Shelby case would have prevented this. Georgia is one of those states with a history of voter suppression and would have had to get preapproval from the courts. The justification of the South has changed is utter bullshit.

Fixing the VRA must be a high agenda item when The Dems take over the House in Jan.

More like January 2021, unfortunately. Even if the Democrats took both the House and Senate, Trump will likely veto anything that doesn't fit his agenda. The only likely way to restore the VRA is to remove the Trump regime.

Yep, the SCOTUS thought we were in post racial mode, how quaint.

Old ways die hard. It's in the hands of the youth to make the necessary changes for true democracy to take hold in the south.

Unlike all of those traditions that folks from the south can be proud of, it certainly isn't "traditional" to be a racist.

If Dems take the House they can craft a fix to the VRA. They should bring it up over and over again. If GOP still have the Senate let them and the President keep rejecting it. Submit it as many times as Republicans submitted a repeal of Obamacare.

Its a good issue for 2020 when districts for favorable to Dems.

Can’t we just bring back the N word? It would make these guys lives so much easier and it would be so much easier to spot them.

I was practically throwing stuff at the TV during the Maddow piece about the shenanigans in North Dakota (although they weren't affected by the gutting of the VRA). Honestly, if the SC is worried about being fair then every state should have voting law changes reviewed by the Justice Department. It's obvious that partisan state-level hacks can't be entrusted with protecting democracy.

Deep South being Deep South. Unfortunately. He's probably a deacon in the local church.

That's what would fix the VRA. Southern Republican states claimed it was unfair to them because other states didn't have pre clearance.

It was used about the Tea Party members also. Sorry to burst your cute little victimhood bubble.
https://www.texastribune.org/2013/04/19/polling-center-seat-tea-party/

"The Tea Party can no longer claim the sexy outsider status of an insurgency. It has repeated the journey of many outside agitators in the American two-party system, which since the 19th Century has specialized in incorporating and de-fanging dissident movements. The insurgents of 2009-10 are now well on their way to becoming another constituency nestled within the GOP. The self-styled revolution has not taken power; rather, it has settled for seats at the table."

The Tea Party was astroturfed by the Koch bros & Faux news.

That phrase was ascribed to them by two authors not Democrats in Congress

Lies repeated often enough are as truth to people like yourself, aren't they?

What’s funny is that his own link debunks his argument. The treasury department did an exhaustive investigation into it and found that not only did the ‘targeting’ not start with Obama, it also looked for liberal and conservative groups.

This is a good example of the total contempt conservative media has for the intelligence of their audience.
