I want to output a powerpoint presentation to a high quality AVI (DV format) file... I remember another time back in office97 days when I wanted to do this and was told that such output was going to be built into office 2000. Well, I've got 2000 at work and officeXP at home and can't find it in either. Is it there? Is there something else I can use to do this?

Well, I've spent a bunch of time and here's what I've learned...

OfficeXP has a broadcast function which lets you record it to a webpage w/ narration and video if you want. However, the presentation itself doesn't become video.

The only way I've found anywhere online to do this is hook up a vcr to the tv-outputs and record it. That's crappy. I need to keep it high quality and nice looking!

Given that, anyone have recommendations for nice (free) software to do text animations - things like fading in and out, other fancier tricks that PPT can do... Something like flash would probably do nicely, but I don't have the moola for that!

I used CamStudio to do a quick and dirty capture of my desktop a few months back. I didn't work with it long enough to find its limits, but I was able to make a simple one minute AVI video of me navigating some menus.

If you're looking for output as flash, the new OpenOffice release can import your PowerPoint presentation, then turn right around and export it as Flash format. This I haven't played with at all, but you might want to give it a shot.

Both of the above are free but CamStudio is unsupported and the OpenOffice suite is a pretty hefty download. Pick your poison. :)
