Outpost: Seagate 160GB HD $50 AR

Be very careful concerning Outpost/Seagate Rebates. I purchased the 200GB drive in September and still have not received my $50 rebate.

Both me and my dad got a seagate drive (on different occasions of course) from FRYs and both times rebate came in about 5-6 weeks. Maybe we were lucky?

This is the status of my rebate:

Date Received: 10-21-2004
Status Detail: Your rebate is valid and is scheduled for final processing.

It shouldn't take 7 weeks for "final processing".

If your rebate is late, then call the phone number and find out what's holding it up.

I haven't had any problems with the Outpost/Seagate rebates I've sent in.

I sent my Seagate/Oupost rebate in early October. When I search for it on Seagate's web site, there are no records found.

You'll notice a difference for sure if you don't have a SATA motherboard.

It will be difficult to get the SATA cable to plug into the IDE port. A lot of duct tape will likely be required.

Lol PinwiZ that's funny but true.

SATA is better..but I hope you have a lot of duct tape handy if you only have IDE.

BTW Jrenna it can take a while for rebates..Frys/Outpost is one of the slowest.

What funny is this drive is $55 at Frys but $50 at outpost. It seems that they lower it $5 on outpost so that you don't have to worry about the shipping cost.

Jeeze guys im not a freaking idiot the board im getting has both sata and ide but this drive is just ide but for the price i dont know if its worth going sata. Any real ansewers other than just duct tape.

Yeah...but you know sata is newer. Any REAL nerd would get it for the only reason of "It's newer"...

J/K

But yeah sata is better.

No point in going SATA other than for the smaller cable which results in slightly better airflow. No performance advantage, so to me there isn't much of a point for paying much more for SATA.

I still haven't received my rebate from the deal back in september.🙁
I'm going to go leave a voicemail at seagate now.

yes be very very careful. I bought this same drive a couple of weeks ago and when it came I didn't see anything about a rebate. In fact the rebate form had changed to the 200 GB drive.

I called them up and they said it was a mistake and that I could get as $15 credit, that's it. Be careful.

Any performance differences (faster or slower) will be negligible. The one advantage SATA gives you, however, is allowing you to access multiple drives concurrently. You can do this to an extent with ide, provided each drive has its own channel, but you can't access both drives on a channel at the same time.

Storage Review has benchmarks for IDE, SATA, and SCSI drives using a number of standards. SATA by their results is definetly superior to IDE and oftentimes rivals U320 SCSI. I would go for it!!! But you need the WD Raptor 74GB. There is another link active in this forum where it is selling in the $150 range, with a mail in rebate.

Exactly, you need Raptor 74Gb. The catch is that it has nothing to do with PATA/SATA interface, the only reason Raptor is so fast is because it's a 10K RPM disc as opposed to 7.2K mainstream HDDs.

i've got two from august i'm still waiting for 🙁

I actually sent in a $50 rebate months ago that they said they never recieved. If you ask me, they are ripping people off.

I think that's the most typical rebate ripoff, claiming they never received it. I'm sure they don't really give a shit, but if a company rips me off for the rebate, I will never ever purchase another one of their products. Many many years ago, Diamond Multimedia lost my $50 rebate for a Voodoo 1 video card (remember those?). I have purposely avoided Diamond's products ever since. The same will go for Seagate if they screw me.

LOL, OMG funny you brougth that up....

I was so happy diamond multimedia died...that POS company.

i bought their supra dual 56k modem, sent in the rebate for $100 and never heard from them, impossible to contact them. those bastards! i still remember it like it was yesterday.

I've done two rebates with Outpost and they were both a REAL PAIN IN THE ASS to collect on. Never again! I had to file complaints with the BBB and the FTC to get them to cough up the money on one $50 rebate. They sent me some money orders in a plain white envelope just to shut me up. Try Staples, they know how to make rebates EASY!
