I tried to send home from work an email message with an attachment from Access. When I got home and tried to open the email I get a message: Outlook Blocked Access to the following Potentially Unsafe Attachments: myfile.mdb.....

How do I lighten up the security to allow attachments, also a friend of my wife's sent me an email with a web site address and it also was blocked.

any help is appreciated

Thanks

There are some utilities available for Outlook 2002 that can help. You can find them here.

Or you can zip an attachment or change its extension to a "safe" extension like ".txt" and then unarchive it or rename it, respectively, after you save it to your hard drive.

The utilities listed at "Slipstick" (the link I gave you above) can streamline the process so that you don't have to use the extension / archiving dodges I mentioned. Do be careful with attachments, though. Never open one from an unknown source. And don't even open one from someone you know unless the attachment is one that you expected, one for which you know the purpose. Outlook was made to function this way because of the huge number of malicious executables that have been flying around all over the Internet via people's mail clients.

Insofar as the e-mail your wife's friend sent you is concerned, do you mean that the whole e-mail was blocked or that you tried clicking on a link in the e-mail and that nothing happened -- or something else?

The email sent from my Wife's friend was a total blank page. Her friend was suppose to send my
a link to a web site but the whole thing was a blank page.

thanks for your help, I will have to try when I get home from work.

Collin, thanks for the security information. I saw your response to the other post. I didn't realize the updated security in Outlook. I was using Outlook 2000 without the patch.

Hmmm. That's weird. I'm thinking that it might have been there in the form of an attached e-mail message. Was there no attachment on this blank page? If so, you'd have to save that to disk, then open it as a file to get to the link inside. That's the only approach I can think of off-hand.

Oh, okay. But, if you're talking about those utilities, I'm not sure they'll work in Outlook 2000. If I'm not mistaken they were made for Outlook 2002 (the one that comes with Office XP). But the Slipstick site should at least have information that might help you get all of this figured out.

Edited to remove embarrassing information that would prove that, moron that I am, I couldn't keep two threads separated in my mind! :D

Collin, I'm now using 2002 because I switched to Win XP and Office XP. Outlook 2000 without the patch didn't have these security measures unless you chose too, thats what threw me for a loop. I was shocked when 2002 wouldn't evene let an access database file go through.

My wife's friend sent me the email with a hyperlink to a web site, but it showed as a blank page when I got it. There was no attachment on the blank page. Just blank....

This XP stuff is new to me..... but I like the looks of it.

Collin, I just got home from work and when I was at work sent myself the database file home with a new extension of txt. How do I change it back to mdb file so access will see it. In older versions of explorer you could just right click and rename it, but now when you look at the file in explorer it does not have the extension next to the file name. I tried rename and added the mdb extension but when I tried to load with Access it still looked at the file as if it were a txt file.

thanks

Hi. If I'm understanding you correctly you need to open a Windows Explorer window on that WinXP machine and go to the Tools menu and click on the Folder Options selection. Click on the View tab of the Folder Options dialog, and unselect the item called "Hide extensions for known file types". That should allow the .mdb (?) extension for the Access database to show up in Windows Explorer. I suspect that you'll have more luck changing the extension after you make this adjustment.

Edit: I'm not sure what happened to the file with the url in it. It's possible that the problem was at the other end. I've never seen Outlook block a link. But, as I said, I'm kind of new to the application.

Hope this helps.

You're most welcome. I'm happy that you were able to get the Access database. I'm sorry, though, that I couldn't help with the e-mailed link. As I said, I've never seen what you're describing with respect to that matter.

I hope you'll find a solution!

Collin
