Outlook XP and Yahoo Mail?

Hello,

I've just started using Office XP today and saw that there is now an option to retrieve web based emails services into your Outlook XP inbox. (In the past this was only possible with Hotmail). There is an option now for "other" that lets you use other web based mail services.

Does anyone have any details on how to configure this puppy to work with yahoo? Here is what I've tried so far which hasn't worked:

Tools -> Options -> Mail setup -> View or Change Existing Email accounts ->

Server information:
HTTP Mail service provider : "Other"
Server URL: http://mail.yahoo.com

Logon information:
Username: my username
Password: my password

User Information:
Your name: my name
Your email: my email

Check box: Logon using secure password authentication (left unchecked)

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Why not set up your Yahoo account as a standard pop3 account? Instructions are available under the "Help" section of Yahoo mail.

I never did really like Pop email accounts that much...the fact that mail sits on the server without it showing up in my inbox was quite annoying.

I had no idea Yahoo offered POP style mail service...I'll look into it. It may fit my needs...I still would like it to mesh with Outlook in the same way that MSN and Hotmail do. (Office XP offers seamless inboxes with Hotmail -- feels like you never left Outlook to check your hotmail).

Assuming you mean that you actually have to check the server to see if new mail is there... with webmail, you need to refresh, with imap you need to download new headers periodically...otherwise, you'd need something along the lines of Exchange/Outlook in order to have 'realtime' views of your inbox. Just have your Outlook check mail every minute if you're that obsessive about getting mail immediately.

All the webmail checking in Outlook does is treat webmail as a hacked up, modified pop3 account. Whenever possible, true pop3 is far superior to that option.

pop mail can be set up to leave mail on the server so that it is still accessible from other interfaces (native webmail or whatever) if that is a concern.

I tried the POP3 interface to Yahoo mail from Outlook XP. Here are a few of my concerns:

  • There is no way to access my different folders within my Y! Mailbox

  • I disagee with you Ladi, there is a way thru Yahoo companion (a toolbar that appears at the top of my IE bar) to see when email arrives without actually going to the inbox -- this is not possible with Outlook

Otherwise the interface works pretty well...It seems logical for Micro$uck to make it difficult to create a seamless interface between outlook and other web based email services besides MSN & hotmail.

I use Yahoo mail and it works fine. Enables me to access mail when travelling and from any dialup or network I connect my laptop into. I never use the web interface, just set Outlook on my laptop to leave messages on server and desktop to delete messages from server when picked up.

When using Yahoo from your main coputer, Outlook uses its own folders and only uses Yahoo to send and receive so nothing sits on their servers any longer than it would any other SMTP server.
