Outlook stole my e-mails

I just installed Outlook 2007 for the first time yesterday. I set it up by giving my e-mail address, etc. I played with it and replied to the test MS message. So far, so good. Then I went to my web e-mail to check my other mail, all the old messages were gone - they had been transferred to Outlook without any asking or telling...

Well I decided this may be a good time to make a full break with my web e-mail, so then I wrote and sent answers to 2 e-mails I received in Outlook. 10 minutes later, I got 2 Undeliverables for those replies (to known addressees). First time that's happened to me in ages... It was unnerving to think Outlook couldn't send 2 e-mails without bouncing them.

So now, my question: Is there any way I can get Outlook to put those e-mails which it commandeered from my web e-mail back on my e-mail server? I don't think I like outlook from my initial brush with it.

I guess I'd like to be able to have my mail and read it, too :) On either the web (my ISP) or in Outlook. Possible?

Thanks for any help, Noel

Outlook has a setting for leaving the messages on the server. Also some web mail like Gmail have settings that will keep your email on the server as well.

The fact you received two bounced emails is NOT outlooks fault.

Make sure your inbound/outbound smtp/pop3 settings are correct in your Outlook configuration. You can verify the settings by clicking on the Test button. This is not an Outlook problem, but one with configuration of the Outlook profile.

Thanks to all for your replies.

Sorry to not have answered earlier, we had a bad storm Saturday and Sunday and lost our power for almost 24 hours. It's back now, thankfully...

I figured I needed to adjust some settings on Outlook. I'll open Outlook this morning and try to find those settings and adjust them. I'll also call my ISP and ask if they are still on the server, although I believe Outlook is the only place they are now. I opened my ISP's web mail this morning BEFORE going to Outlook, and all my mail from Sunday is there. The older ones which are on Outlook are not. So I'm convinced the settings are the key. When I opened Outlook for the first time, it just took control of setting things up and I never considered to look for an Outlook profile... my bad!!

I'll let you know what happens,

Noel

Hi all,

Think I have the problem solved... I found a setting buried under Tools/E-mail accounts/highlighted my e-mail address/click on change/more settings/check "leave a copy of messages on the server." Whew, took some searching, but the test message stayed in both Outlook and my ISP's web mail. I hope this does it.

Thanks for you help, Noel

I think when you set up a new account in Outlook it should bring up the leave a copy of message on server option. I like to keep my stuff on Gmail for example, Outlook shouldn't default to deleting the messages off the server, or like I said at least ask you which you prefer. Glad you figured it out though.

QueBert,

You're right, it shouldn't default that way, but apparently it did because to my recollection it never asked me for anything but my e-mail address. Maybe I was asleep when I installed it, but on 3 machines? Maybe a mechanization of the new Outlook 2007?

Fortunately I can forward the old e-mails that I want to keep from Outlook to my web mail - then I can transfer them to Eudora for storage with all my others via a 56k modem... at least until I know the ins and outs of Outlook :)
