Outlook service without outlook being open???

Is there any way to have an Outlook "service" running (XP or 2000) that will check for new emails and notify me without having outlook open?? I assume there are 3rd party apps that do this, but I just wondered if outlook can be configured to do this.

If not, what good 3rd party apps do this?

Just wondering....

thanks

It does seem like MS should have included this type of feature in Outlook since it is a huge waste of resources just to keep it open to check mail and regular intervals, but no they didn't include it.

I use LetterBox to run in the system tray and check every 60 seconds. There are many others but I like this one personally.
