Default settings in Outlook terminate the connection to the server after a manual Send/Receive for dial-up connections. If you go under Tools -> Options and then click on the Mail Settings tab, there's a button for Send/Receive options where that can be changed. You can adjust the timing preferences there. The main tab also has the checkbox for disconnect after manual Send/Receive (uncheck that). As for the notification, within Options under the General tab, there's a button for E-mail Options. If you click that, you'll see a button for Advanced E-mail Options in the new window. Clicking that button will get you to where the receive notification settings are. If those boxes are unchecked (Sound, Cursor, and Show Envelope), check them.
