Outlook - Problems with replying to emails

I have a user here that is having troubles sending emails from within our network. He claims that he cannot respond to emails when they are open. He has to close them and then click on Reply or Reply to all from the Outlook menu.

Now, I don't have the most tech savy people here and I am wondering if when he opens an email from Outlook it automatically puts the cursor in the message, making him think he can just type in there. I don't think he is opening the message, then hitting reply to open a reply message. What do you think?
