Just like the last one I posted on this topic, this is on Outlook 2003 on Win7, but it probably applies to other versions.
The user would see this error when either they click on the 'address book' button on the toolbar or if they have a mail composition window up and click on the 'To' box to choose recipients. The error occurred 95% of the time when clicking on either option.
Googling this problem suggested possibilities like 'dud Outlook profile' or 'corrupt PST', but on this occasion it was neither of those. On this occasion it was Avast that was causing the problem, possibly either the file system shield or the mail shield as they're the only two shields I originally installed (I tried a load of other things as well, for example I know it's not related to an Office 2003 update). Disabling Avast didn't help, nor did disabling the mail shield or did adding the Outlook PST file from the AV engine. I uninstalled it and the problem disappeared.
I have no theories for why Avast might cause a problem like this, since the user could for example send/receive email fine and go on the Internet, no other symptoms either.
The user had been using 'Avast free' for years on the PC in question and this problem simply seemed to come out of the blue. Perhaps a duff Avast update caused it to go squirrelly, no idea.
