Outlook Express

For some reason Outlook Express frequently asks me if I would like to compress my message. Issue is I don't keep much in my inbox and I clean out my delete box frequently. Even if I say Yes, it will ask again within hours. Anyway to get this to stop asking so often.

if you clean your inbox/delete boxes but don't restart Outlook Express then these boxes are not actually cleaned. Compression and cleanup of the message database files are not made on fly but require Outlook Express to be restarted.

The reason it keeps prompting to compress is because you delete so much email. It's just a side effect of deleting significant quantities of mail.

How to change that behavior? I don't know.

If you’re still using Outlook Express for your e‑mail, consider using Windows Live Mail instead.

Windows Live Mail? LOL! Never! Why put your email in some one else's footlocker? Try Thunderbird.

thunderbird is okay - but why not just use outlook - it works great. integrates with all other windows services quite well.

even outlook - you need to compress your pst after a while to clean up the single file database

You do realize that Windows Live Mail is the successor to Outlook Express and is different from Windows Live Hotmail.

Yes, I realize that. That is why I continue to use Outlook Express in Windows 7. 🙂 My problem is the word "Live." It connotes a link with Microsoft.

Actually, I use two email programs. I receive mail in Eudora Pro - it is the best manager I have ever used. I send mail in Outlook Express beczause I can embed MIDI files as background music. 🙂

As for compressing files, that happens rarely because I don't receive or store mail in OE.

I have several PC's running XP. One was using Outlook Express and another Outlook. Both pgms eventually started crashing and snooping around discovered Windows Live Mail would run on XP and appears MS future direction and support with email? Anyway, I have a much better running email pgm, though just using basic email feature.

fyi, the OutLook Express PC migration over went without a hitch. But my Outllook PC conversion required a downgrade of IE 8 back to IE 6, a registry mod, then a exort from Outlook to Outlook Express then a Outlook Express export then import to Live Mail. Then manually move store folder contents to email accounts. A BIG THANKS TO MS for that one!

It has no more link to MS than OE does. It has some additional features that might "link" you to MS more, but you don't have to use them.

First,

It is related to desktop search - right-click the magnifying glass icon in the toolbar menu and choose Windows Desktop Search Options from the menu.

If Microsoft Outlook Express is listed under 'Included Locations' then left-click on it and click on the 'Modify' button'. You should see an Indexed Locations popup where you can 'uncheck' the Microsoft Outlook Express: Main Identity entry and you will no longer receive the message.

Then,

Try this:
Edit the registry manually to reset the counter manually:

1. Close Outlook Express and all message windows.
2. Click Start, click Run and type without quotes "regedit".
3. Navigate to this key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlo ok Express\5.0

where GUID is the long number used for your Identity.
4. In the right-hand pane, double-click "Compact Check Count", then change the value to zero.
5. Close regedit and restart your computer.

I don't know. I haven't tested the threshold. I delete about that many a week and I get prompted to compress less than once a month, I believe.

On rare occasion I go through and purge a dozen or so old messages at once and that tends to trigger a prompt on closing OE. Could have something to do with the size of attachments in the deleted messages.

I did not realize you could use Outlook Express in Windows 7. How did you manage that?

Actually, it is Windows Mail lidted directly from Vista - folder and all files, then create a link to it. WinMail is for all practical purposes the same as OE - just changes Address Book to Windows COntacts, and adds some better security. But, the navigation and GUI are basically the same.
