I tried following the procedure to disable Messenger in User Profiles\Templates\Components\Messenger.
When I enabled both entries Outlook Express slowdown to a crawl. So I left the first "Not Configured"
and the second "Enabled". After that OE worked fine.
 
Yeah, same with me, but what I don't like is, that Messenger is started everytime I open Outlook. OK it is closed again with Outlook but...

BTW the registry hack did not work for me, because those key are not present on my system!
