Hey, I believe i have put myself in a bit of trouble here.

I was reinstalling the OS, w2kpro, and just copied the .dbx files onto cd, which i had thought was good enough. I had done this before, apparently with ie5 or 5.5, and i could just copy the files back into the unique directory for each given identity. It won't work this time with ie 6. I tried to copy the files back, but when i tried to run OE, it would get a termination error, "msimn has generated errors and will be closed by windows". more specifically when i copied the "folders.dbx" file into it. when i copied the other files individually, it would just create another file as i opened OE. any suggestions? I really need to get the emails back into the folders, my dad was a bit... disgruntled... i checked for some stuff online, but most of it had to do with copying registry keys... which is a bit late for me. I know i should have done some research into it before, but this method had worked before, and i wrongly assumed that it would work this time as well.

TIA,

-Mel

It works in OE6 as well. I have OE6 put all my mail folders on an external drive in a folder called \OE6Mail. I copy that entire folder onto a zip or LS-120 disk and that way I can synch my mail to my other computers, especially my laptop for travel.

There are more than .DBX files involved - there is also a log file and one other. Do the entire folder and it will work as long as you set OE6 up to use that named folder. It can be anywhere. You set that in OE6 under Tools, Options, Maintenance and Store Folder.

Found the problem. Somehow the files were set as "read only" most likely by nero, i think. I just had to change that, and everything worked fine.

Thanks for your help,

OK - that explains it - all files from CDs are "read only" until changed. I never ran into that moving my OE6 mail data base because I use LS-120 disks to do that ot direct LAN file transfers. Glad you found it.

Heh. Microsoft KB article helped when the error gave me one of those 0x000... messages. whew... my father would have been... disgruntled...

LS 120, nice, i have a parallel version, but boy is it slow... sorta good technology, but never caught on... everything will move to cds then to dvds, i think... much cheaper and faster and more widely used.

Thanks for your input though.

Does this data folder in OE6 Correspond to the personal folders in Outlook 2000? That can be reached through tools->options [mail setup] tab, and data files?
