Anyone got a clue for me here? I use Outlook Express and have Norton Antivirus 2001 as part of SystemWorks. Just yesterday, after a year or more of Norton protecting my email, I started getting the error dialog box

The host 'pop3.norton.antivirus' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'pop.metrocast.net', Server: 'pop3.norton.antivirus', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

I've gone into Account Options and into Norton's options to clear protection, reboot, reset protection, and now I've tried reinstalling NAV, but all to no avail. I know at least something of what's going on with the way it's supposed to work, and I'm stumped. Tech support at metrocast could only suggest what I've already tried.

I was having this same type of problem. It was as if the norton server that my e-mail was being sent through would go down. It would be down for a day and then the next day work. Finally I just gave up with it and killed NAV all together. (I did run it without cleaning my e-mail for a bit) I installed AVG and so far so good.

I figure that even if Norton isn't watching the email, I can scan attachments and it also protects any file activity, too.

So email front-line-of-defense isn't absolutely crucial?

I've several times seen references to AVG as being somehow better than Norton?

Well for me im not to worried about viruses. I know what e-mails to check and I keep up on all updates to outlook.

On that note I have never had a virus on any of my machines. I have caught some before I have never been inficted.

As for AVG it seems to work just fine. It scans all incoming and outgoing files.
