Outlook Express + Hotmail problem

I spent a good 2 hours looking at this guy's PC today trying everything under the sun to get his hotmail synced with Outlook Express. Now he bought the premium account that was required for this so that's not the problem.

I set it just as it should be set. When the default server path is in Outlook will hang indefinitely on "Retrieving messages 1 of xx." When I change it to an alternate path (one that was recommended in a MSKB article) it downloads all the messages but then says they cannot be displayed. For the latter, the error messages are that the messages have expired-- they clearly haven't as I can go into his web-based hotmail and see them plain as day.

Things I've ruled out:
- Firewall. I unplugged the firewall box and tried it-- no avail.
- Outlook itself (?). Tried Thunderbird + Webmail extension and it hangs when downloading the messages. A note about this though, I managed to get it to download about 5 of the 14 msgs in his inbox through Thunderbird. It gets to a bigger(?) message and will hang until it times out.
- Header. I set the option in Thunderbird to download headers only and it downloaded all the emails but would not open them when clicking the link to view them. (Hang + timeout).

ANY help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
