Outlook Express hanging up on connection?

On a new install of Windows 98 SE --virtually no software loaded yet -- Outlook Express hangs up the connection to my ISP if I click on the Send/Receive icon; which is how I used to check to see if any new messages were waiting at the ISP. Similarly if I click on the X icon in the upper right corner in Explorer instead of closing the explorer window and leaving the connection alive, it hangs up as well. I can not find a place where this automated hang up is selected -- or more importantly, where I can deselect it. There is another anomaly, no matter how many times I check the box saying to connect automatically, it is always unchecked the next time I attempt a connection and I must click on the connect icon to make the connection. Hopefully the problem is simple to solve -- for someone else. Please help if you know the solution.

I don't know if it could be this easy or not, but click send/receive, when the window comes up shoing it checking your server, there is a check box that says: "Hang up when finished."

Make sure that is not checked.

yeah tank is more than likely correct, otherwise check under properties and see if theres anything that might kill your connection, otherwise if everything else fails, backup your emails, contacts, etc and reinstall outlook.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the "Hang up when finished box" is not checked. It is really aggravating -- turns out it is hanging up at other times too. I will try a reinstall eventually but was hoping that since this is a new installation there would be some place where settings I don't know about are controlling this hanging up. Thanks again.

in OE there is an option hang up after sending and recieving. go to tools-->options-->connection and you should see it there.

I sure thought you had found the problem, but when I went tools/options/connection, the "Hangup after sending and receiving" box is not checked. Damn.

Go to add remove programs, and choose to Remove MS Internet Explorer, then choose the repair option.

Also, have you installed any apps/shareware that has anything to do with connectivity? Fax, ect? There might be a third party app causing probs., especially with the way you described the passwords missing???

is OE set up correctly to dial your ISP? in the connection tab of the options menu, click "change" and configure the correct dial up correctly. for example, select your dial up icon -> settings -> advanced -> uncheck "disconnect when connection may no longer be needed"

btw, I've also been having problems with OE in that it sometimes won't connect to the email servers so I switched to eudora. it took a while getting used to it but now I love it (although the address book is an eye sore and not as convienant).

Thanks to all of you that have responded to my query. I have assembled many systems and never encountered anything like what I was seeing here. This a new system which I was just setting up and on which I had only installed Windows 98SE thus far, plus NetMedic after I set up the modem: A Zoltrix 56K V90 ISA hardware modem which I have used with great success for some time. I was pretty sure I had made no choices that accounted for the problem, and my impression was that it was a developing problem. I wasn't sure, but I didn't recall OE hanging up on clicking on Send/Receive when I first installed the software but then I wasn't sure I had done so earlier. Last night it began hanging up as soon as I clicked on Send after writing an e-mail. In other words I was replying to an e-mail and as soon as I tried to send it, the system hung up and the connect box came up. This was certainly new. I did what I had been avoiding and did a reinstall and everything is working properly thus far -- but then as best I can remember, so was the original installation -- at first. I will watch this closely. Net Medic is still installed. It is the latest version which is supposed to work with Windows 98 SE.
Again, thanks for the responses. I appreciate the help.
