Outlook Express .dbx files. YES, I have read the FAQ

I've never had a problem backing up and restoring my outlook dbx files but I am just setting up a fresh install and I've hit a problem I haven't found before. Usually, I just set up my account with all my normal folders in the new installation, then just replace the new, small .dbx files with my old copies. Voila, no problems. However, this go around, instead of using the copies of the .dbx files, outlook creates a new .dbx for each folder. i.e. I have a folder called "Retailers". After replacing this file with the backup copy and running Outlook, the program creates a new "Retailers (1)" file which is just an empty inbox. Any ideas?

I have encountered this problem also. I finally worked around it by deleting all the original .dbx files and then replacing them with the backup copies. When I would create all the folders first as you have, I would run into the same exact problem. It's got to be a registry thing because there does not appear to be an index file like their used to be.

Maybe this is the result of some changes made for security reasons by Microsoft?

So you create a new profile, delete all the dbxs, then put the backups in the new directory? Do you need to recreate the folders in Outlook at any point?

Uh, I just realized I'm using OE and you're talking about Outlook. Anyway, when I open up OE, all the folders are there. With all their contents.

No I don't create the folders, just copy them into the directory.

I've performed this operation with Outlook Express probably 40 times from Win98 to Win2K and XP at work and have yet to see such an occurance.

Are you closing OE before copying and pasting the files? You also say "set up my account with all my normal folders". I take that to mean that you allow OE to set up it's own folders, correct?
