I'm helping my brother abandon his old Win2000 desktop for a new Dell desktop, Vista Home Premium.

He's been using Outlook Express and of course, wants his new Outlook Express to have his address book and messages and various configurations, if possible. I exported his address book to a CSV file OK on my flash drive. But when I try to export the messages up comes a screen saying it will export them to either Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange. Neither are installed on his old Win2000 system. The options are OK or Cancel, so I click OK and I get this:

Export Messages

X The export could not be performed.

An error occurred while initializing MAPI.

OK

What is going on here? Surely there's got to be a way he can get his Outlook Express information over to his new system. Thanks for any help.

Copy the Outlook express folder (containing his e-mail files) to the vista system or an external device. In Microsoft mail import from Outlook express and point at the folder that contains the Outlook Express FOLDER, not in the actual folder. And it should import all the messages.

Thanks, that's exactly what I wound up doing. Similar for his account information and address book. I copied the save folder and exported those other files to my USB HD based iriver H140 and accessed them from the new system and everything worked out OK. I wasn't aware that Outlook Express was replaced by Windows Mail in Vista, but soon figured that out. I guess it's similar?
