Outlook Express 6 Question

I bought a new hard drive, and reinstalled XP Pro. I backed up the folders where all of my emails are stored. Now, I want to get all those emails back into my account, but I can't seem to make it work. Is there an easy way to do this? Thank you.

If you backed up the correct files, you should have a bunch of files with .dbx extensions. You need to find your current Outlook Store Folder and copy all those .dbx files into it.

To find that folder, open Outlook Express. Go to Tools -> Options -> Maintenance -> Store Folder. Highlight the entire path for the store folder (it will be very long and ctrl+A won't work so use the mouse to swipe it from left to right and make sure you highlight the entire path name) and copy the path name into the clipboard using CTRL+C.

Close Outlook Express and click Start -> Run. Paste the clipboard text into the Run box using CTRL+V and click the OK button. That should open an Explorer window showing the contents of your Outlook Express Store Folder. You should see some .dbx files in there. Now copy and paste your old .dbx files into that folder overwriting the ones in there.

Open Outlook Express and all your mail folders should be there.

Simple enough, but I have one question. I backed up three different identities from OE6. So how do I know which .dbx files are for each identity? Before I cut and paste the back up files, I want to be sure I'm not putting my messages into my wife's, for example.

OK. I played around a bit, (always having a backup so I couldn't screw up too badly), and was able to import the various emails into the new OE6 setup. But that leaves me with this question: there are three identities used with OE6. Mine, my wife's, and my daughter's. Yet when I go to where the .dbx files are stored, (local settings>application data>identities), there are 8 folders. I'm confused. Who/what are these? Shouldn't there be one folder per ID? Is there an easy way to identify which folder belongs to which email address? And in the future, is there an easier way to back up and then restore OE6? What a pain in the butt.
Many thanks!

Never done this with multiple identities, but this should work:

Each identity will have it's own store folder. Assuming you backed up all three original store folders, create 3 identities, then follow my instructions above for finding the store folder for each identity, and copy the appopriate .dbx files into the store folders.

Hope this helps...
