I guess Microsoft is truly taking after the Borg - they can regenerate lost files now. I don't use Outlook Express; figured I might as well remove it. Well not only does there appear to be no uninstall option, but when I backup, and then delete the files in the folder (can't just delete the folder, as Windows says that something in it is in use), they disappear, but within a few seconds, they're back again! Where are they coming from, and why won't they stay away?

Yhe title says outlook express, but the text says outlook, so here's both.

For Outlook Express, from add or remove programs, go to addd/remove windows components and remove the check box from outlook express.

For Outlook, go to Add or remove programs and scroll down to office XP and click change, select the add or remove office XP components and uncheck the Outlook box.

It's Outlook Express - as far as I know, Outlook is a part of Office, that needs to be installed - I'd never do a thing like that. (There, edited post to say "Outlook Express") :)
I tried Add/Remove Programs - I don't see Microsoft Outlook Express, or Outlook Express listed there.

Removing OE requires alot more than just deleting the files. It requires a bit of registry hacking. I did it the other day for a client who somehow destroyed OE6. Let me see if I can dig up the KB article on how to do it.

Here is the article for Win2k. Proceeed at your own risk. I'm not sure how to do it in XP if that's what you run, I wouldn't try this method with XP.

Holy hell...
Find and rename the following files (these files are the same in Outlook Express 6.0):

Inetcomm.dll
Msoeacct.dll
Msoert2.dll
Msoe.dll
Msoeres.dll
Msimn.exe
Oeimport.dll
Oemiglib.dll
Oemig50.exe
Setup50.exe
Wab.exe
Wabfind.dll
Wabimp.dll
Wabmig.exe
Csapi3t1.dll
Directdb.dll
Wab32.dll
Wab32res.dll

So in other words, "We don't think you should ever remove Outlook Express because it is simply so wonderfully amazing that no one would ever WANT to remove it. But if you do want to get rid of it, we'll make it as much of a pain as we can."

I did get rid of the files, and stop the auto-restore thing, but the directory remains, and it doesn't want to be removed. Can you rename folders using Recovery Console?

If the uninstall went OK, personally, I would just say fsck it and live with the folder. ;)

Try restarting in safe mode and deleting the folder.

Yeah; and leaving it there probably wouldn't have caused any problems. I just got mad at it I guess, and I set my mind on removing it.:D
Thanks for your help everyone.
