This is from the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

OLEXP: MAPI Error Messages When You Import or Export Messages

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
When you try to import messages into Outlook Express, you may receive the following error message:

Messages can not be imported from the MAPI client. An error has occurred.
When you try to export messages from Outlook Express, you may receive the following error message:
The Export could not be performed. An error occurred while initializing MAPI.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you configure Outlook Express to be the default Simple Messaging application programming interface (MAPI) client.

RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, follow these steps:

Restart your computer, and then start Outlook Express.

On the Tools menu, click Options.

On the General tab, click the "Make Outlook Express my default Simple MAPI client" check box to clear it, and then click Apply.

Click OK when you receive the following prompt:

The Simple MAPI client has been changed. You may need to restart your machine for the change to take effect.

Click OK, quit Outlook Express, and then restart your computer. You should be able to import or export messages.

NOTE: After you complete the import or export process, you can configure Outlook Express to be the default MAPI client. For information about how to configure Outlook Express to be the default MAPI client, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Have you tried upgrading to Outlook 5.5 ?
I tried doing the same with my outlook express and got the same error, although when I have OUTLOOK installed and export to that it works fine. (from memory, it was a while ago since I used Outlook)

If you are just trying to get a back up of your mail, why dont you just copy all the *.dbx files to a backup mail dir. ?

See, that's the problem........i could and did do that when i had WinMe. but right now i am under Win98, and it says there are multiple copies of the emails (there aren't.....they just have the same subject line), so i can't do that.

I tried going to outlook express 5.5, but when i download the update prog, it says taht i have the latest version of internet explorer, so it wont' update it for me. So yeah.......any suggestions? Would outlook work if i installed WinMe over win98?

When you download the internet explorer installer, if you go into the custom settings (sorry I can't remember exact wording ) you can select exactly which components you want to download and install, you should not have to install IE again to be able to download and upgrade Outlook Express. Its been awhile since I used 98 so if this is incorrect hopefully someone will point it out.
