Outlook and Word processes keep running

Whenever I X out of Outlook (full version, not express), the Outlook icon remains in the System Tray. When I go into Task Manager, I notice that Outlook.exe is still running and Winword.exe is also running. I cannot start outlook again until I cancel these processes. Does anyone know how to combat this problem? Thanks.

Things I have tried with no success:
Reinstalling office
Repairing office

I use Outlook 2003 all the time, but do not use Word as the email editor. I just tried to recreate your problem by turning on Word as the email editor. Everything worked fine sending and exiting Outlook.

Only thing I could think of is if you are have an open, unsent mail message when you exit Outlook. I tried this and it appeared to hang. Actually, I got a "do you want to save..." message from Word. However, as Outlook was active (Word in a background window), a flashing box on the taskbar was the only indication of why Outlook appeared to be stuck. After replying "NO" to the Word prompt, Word and Outlook ended correctly.

I doubt this is your problem. Just an attempt on my part to recreate your problem. In Outlook 97, the Outlook-Word integration was called Wordmail as was terrible. It still crashed a lot in Outlook 2000 (according to a book I have), and MS may still have some kinks in Office 2003.
Good luck!
