Looking for possible causes for corruption.

Window 7 32 bit all updates, Office 2007 SP2 and all updates, POP3 mail account, 5.68 GB pst file, repeatedly archived and compacted.

Restore through the Import and Export Wizard, it is unusual restoration, but quite effective

-Open the Import and Export Wizard

Outlook 2007 and previous
File-> Import and Export…
Outlook 2010
File-> Open-> Import
Outlook 2013
File-> Open & Export-> Import/Export
-Choose Import from another program or file.
-Choose Personal Folder File (.pst).
-Browse to the location where you’ve restored the pst file. For instance: D:\My Documents\My Outlook\Temp
-Set the options to “Include subfolders” and “Import items into the same folder in:” and select the folder that is listed as your Outlook Today folder set in the dropdown list.
-Press Finish to complete the import.

Restart Outlook and remove the export.pst file from the Temp directory if desired.

although you can make larger psts Since outlook 2003 I try to keep them under 2gb. I would split the larger pst into 2gb files.

Sometimes the only option is to create a new pst file and import all the emails into it.

I've also seen some a/v software screw up the email data file when it detects a virus in an attachment. I occasionally disable the email component of a/v software. If there's a virus it can detect in the attachment, rather than detecting it when downloading the email, it'll detect it if you tried to run the attachment.
