Outlook 2003 PST File - Contacts included?

So a new user in my department had his old IT guy backup his Outlook files. He comes to me with a single Outlook PST file which I imported into the account I setup for him already. All his e-mail folders come over just fine.

Apparently he was under the impression that his contacts would be included with that. I googled a bit and it appears contacts SHOULD be included in the PST files, but they definitely are not with his. I loaded Outlook on my laptop and just dropped his PST in as the main PST file for that install; again e-mails showed up fine, but no contacts.

Am I missing anything or is this guy SOL?

Thanks!

Go to 'Contacts' and right click it. Select properties. Go to the 'Outlook Address Book' tab. Make sure 'Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book' is checked.

Maybe they didn't include contacts when they created the pst? When you export to PST, by default, only the inbox and all subfolders is selected. They would've needed to click on the top level 'Mailbox - Username' node in the export dialog to get everything including contacts.

In Outlook, go to File>Import and Export...>Import from another program or file>Personal Folder File (.pst), now select the PST file you want to import, and hit next. Now select contacts and have it include sub folders, and at the bottom hit the drop down menu and select your Exchange mailbox that you want to import it to. Now just hit finish and he should have his contacts back.

Sorry if it was too detailed. Just want to make sure I was thorough enough for you.

If you just open the PST file in Outlook, you may not see the contacts or calendar. You'll need to import it to see either one. I would find it rather odd that when he exported the PST file, he exported everything EXCEPT his contacts. Like I said, I would specifically import the contacts, and import it to his Exchange mailbox. If he exported his mail on the Exchange server, he won't see his contacts or calendar if he just opened the pst in Outlook.

During the import process I see no reference to Contacts at all. After I select the PST file, here is the only option I see to potentially select something:

The user mentioned that before they also had an Outlook Web Interface, so I don't know how they had their e-mail accounts setup at all. Could the Contacts have been stored elsewhere?

And we don't use an Exchange server or anything; just IMAP e-mail accounts, its a university.

Well I can tell you that pst file contains no contact information. Have you checked for *.pab files on his old machine? If he has those, that's probably where all his contacts are.

I don't have his old machine; he came from a university in Florida to ours in NC, so unless his IT people can get anything he's SOL. Thanks for confirming this on my part, I'll let him know to get in touch with his old IT people.
