So I need a new suit or two and a friend pointed me to a Banana Republic outlet store for some good deals, so I'm making the trip tomorrow to pick one or two up.

I'm curious though, what's the deal with them? Are they somewhat regular stores in that I can go in, try stuff on, maybe have myself measured and all that? Or is it more warehouse style?

Should I get myself measured before I go, or will they deal with it there?

You're just buying something off the rack - grab what looks nice, try it on in a dressing room. It's not like they have their own in-house tailors, so getting measured would do you no good.

Make sure the jacket fits correctly, or as close to correct as possible; make sure the pants fit well in the waist and around the hips; get everything else adjusted/tailored as needed.

yep. Jackets are pretty easy to size and can be done so with a mirror and a store assistant if you haven't done it before.

The slacks will come only with waist measurement, and will need to be hemmed

Edited for

Oh and BR is pretty good, especially if you get a nice deal at an outlet. I generally like their styles, and their stuff seems tailored for us tall & thin types.

The quality isn't always top notch, though; but for the price (with their sales) they can be hard to beat.

Good to know. That's basically what a friend of mine who is similarly built told me as well.

Considering my only other suit is 10 years old and doesn't even fit anymore, this is long overdue.

Banana Republic is my favorite shop to fit my thin body. But, their clothing really doesn't last very long at all. Bah. They have been running a special where they provide free tailoring with a professional tailor for any male clothing purchase (my fiancee thought it was quite sexist that the special didn't apply to female clothing). I don't know if they are still doing that or if an outlet would participate. But for the most part, expect to have to pay extra to go to a tailor. They aren't too pricey though. Think $10-$15 per change typically (hem, waist, inseam, etc).

You don't need a "professional tailor". Go to any dry cleaners and they'll probably have someone on staff who'll measure you, hem your clothes and get it back to you in a day or two.

you should check out http://www.staccatomen.com/ on 1st by burrard. they have suits in the BR regular price range and are of better quality and are fitted as well. i've picked up a couple here and they're almost as good as the harry rosen entry suits for twice as much.

Hmm, might do that. A model buddy of mine tipped me off to the BR outlet store in Tulalip. $120 for a suit he says.

I can get it hemmed at one of the local tailors or dry cleaners for $15 I think. I'll be in a bit of a rush for it, but I think I can make it work.

At BR you would be looking at Suit separates. Know your regular pant size and jacket will be pretty standard. Obviously, just try them on.

If you want something more fitted, you will have to get a real suit and not just suit separates.

Check out brooksbrothers outlet for more suit separate choices.
