Outer Space MMORPG

Back in the day, I used to play this awesome game called Earth and Beyond. It is a space-based MMORPG made by EA, which was discontinued a while ago. Ever since, I've been hoping to find a game that is as much fun to play as EnB was.

I gave EVE Online a try, and no. It was not the kind of game I want to play. EnB was fun from the start, and not complicated to learn. To me, playing EVE was more like going to a boring job than playing a game.

So does anyone have any recommendations for an EnB "replacement"? I think it would be great if Blizzard made "Universe of Starcraft" or something like that. I just like being able to hook up a space ship, fly around and blow stuff up. Fun PvP would always be a plus.

When did you give EVE Online a try? It is changing very rapidly and allowing more 'profession' type play around the opera that it already is. It is truely something that would make Elite proud.

I think you need to justify the type of 'personal' play you want out of it. Do you want a carebear game that you can toil and do what you want with no penalties? You won't find a good MMO that will do that with a space back drop but there is a free grind game : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Cowboy_Online but that really does lack depth and it is a korean-type game. http://sco.gpotato.com/

However it is free to play.

Some of my best friends in EVE are EnB vets. They have been playing since EnB went belly up like mad men and women. EVE isn't a job unless you make it one. It is the prototype 'friend' oriented game. If you want to play by yourself then you are going to be ass out or running multiple accounts to fill in the games where people should be.

PVP in EVE is fun. Again... if you want a carebear game... you won't find it with a space background. Jump to Lightspeed in SWG is the closest thing to what you are looking for but you will definately find that a grind especially if you don't play with others.

Everyone keeps saying that EVE had this massive change that makes it less crappy but i haven't seen it. i tried it a few times over the past 2 years or so and again just recently. i didn't notice a difference.

Another vote for Anarchy Online. Had to quit it because it took up too much of my time :(

I loved EnB :(

At least for the three months I played the beta. When I found out they wanted me to pay monthly I decided I had better uses for my money :D

I'm also looking for a good space MMO. EVE is out of the question ( I beta tested it, and have done a couple of free trials since) as it is too much time spent working towards new skills.

I played it like mad for a couple months, then I realized how pointless it was when I got to the temple thingy where all the high-level players are. People just go there and kill monsters; it's really boring. It was fun at first reading about the different things engineers could build and such, but no one seemed to take advantage of that stuff.

I also remember back in the day when I wanted to play Earth & Beyond so badly. There was another space MMO that was played very little, but it was very "jump into the action" style. You had a ship and could build/mine stuff on planets with a tractor beam thing. You could build/buy weapons and look for enemies to kill. I don't remember a lot of it, but it was quite entertaining (played the trial version).

Anarchy Online is kinda old, but for the price (Free) it's pretty hard to beat if you've never tried it.

I use to run a lot of hours into that game back in the day, especially since me and my friends got into it during the early inception of the game.

Ah memories... thinking about it makes me nostalgic. I can almost see myself in Freshman year in high school. :p

Sorry my nerd moment just passed. Try AO for free and worst case scenario, you burn a couple of hours.

I loved EnB, omg. I had like 6 different friends playing that, was sad when it died. Lvl150 Jenquai Warrior, go me. Too bad they made lasers basically useless a little after I left. Against like the Tengu or something. Terran Enforcers became more overpowered than normal. Especially in PvE.

Power leveling was great until it was nerfed. I also became friendly with the pirate faction killing Chavez forever. Oh god, good times.

Then you just, for a lack of getting into an argument, just don't know how to play the game. EVE isn't like WoW or SWG or any other game. It is a living and breathing world where 20-30k play every day on one server.

If you want to log in and see new features right away then you can't expect much because that is not how EVE works. Its an onion m8 and you have to peel the layers. I could play the game the same as I did in 2003. But I grew, if you are casual... its not the game for you unless you like playing 15 bucks a month for a screen saver with built in IRC.

Did you try the exploration system? I mean, really try? Can you fly one of the more specialized ships like interdictors in a fleet battle? Can you fly a command ship into combat? Or do you ... do lvl 4 missions and try to ... be a anti-pirate and get bored and quit? Did you join a 'GOOD' 0.0 corp or alliance and go TAKE someones space from them or terrorize them to where they approached you for peace instead of rabble you in local? Have you played with the invention which is a major overhaul of the tech 2 production system that puts it in ANYONES hands?

Qualify how it hasn't changed... cause I will call noob every time if all I get is a 'meh its the same' because it is nowhere near the same. I am a active 4 year vet with 4 accounts with 40+ mil Skill points on 2, 25+ on 2 others. I can't even do a lot of content like exploration which is highly, highly specialized.

I'm not the type of gamer who really enjoys EVE, but the game still amazes me and demands appreciation.

I love Eve and I haven't played anything else much since I joined in Feb'07, but I recognize it's not for everyone. The learning curve is steep, the first few weeks/months are difficult and spent to figure out personal goals as your understanding of the game improves.

Eve keeps me interested in a manner that my dust-gathering PS3 can't. (Bought it for Blu-Ray movies... tried a few games and keep going back to the PC).

I would love it if a "starfleet command 4" type of game came out. I liked SFC3.

AO was a great game for me too... I used to burn away many hours there.

There was a social aspect which was easily missed if you weren't in a guild or didn't listen to Gridstream radio. I was in a Clan guild Valor Eternal, and most of the DJ's for the webcast Gridstream radio were also in that guild. Lots of great parties / webcast radio from Reet's nightclub.

I'm still friends with a number of people all over the world whom I met through the game.

I agree in that it does have step learning curve. For someone to get the most out of EVE they need to go onto the forums and ask for starter advice and how to plan out their character.

Also the application EVEMON is a must for anyone who really wants to get into EVE and develop a good character. The best thing to do in EVE is to pick a very specific role/ship you want to learn and focus on that and developing all the skills you need to be good at that role/ship effectively. Trying to learn everything is not advised and not even needed if all you want to do is PvP so no you don't need mining skills or traders skills. Focus on the area you want to excel at and do so. Later on once you developed your area of main interest you can later branch out.

Someone recommended I check out Vendetta because I'm making a MMO, space shooter, with FPS aspects (far in the future).
