I've found that JD Powers and Weiss Ratings rate companies but I've found no other way of determining which company I should go with. Are there other sites that have some type of rating system for insurance carriers or underwriters?

Go with Anthem. I needed insurance a few months ago and found their plans the most reasonable. You can get an instant quote on their site.

Your location, family size and a general health info may get you more informed replies.

It may not be cheapest option, but you should be able to COBRA current health insurance for about 18 months.

COBRA is by far the most expensive option. It's around $1000 per month. For health insurance I'll probably just go short term for an emergency, don't need doctor visits or meds.

S&P and Moody's have ratings for insurance companies, just found that out.

Kaiser is available in Maryland and they generally get pretty high ratings from what I have seen.

You can let COBRA ride for a while without paying and then if (heaven forbid) you have an emergency, go back and pay up. Not sure how it works, but my daughter did that after she lost her teaching job and her husband needed an emergency appendectomy. Just a thought. Hospitals are expensive.

wrong as usual, littlenate. its broke because of greedy CEOs and politicians lining up their pockets on the expense of the sick and the poor.

Yes, because people that could pay for their care and but choose to freeload helps everyone else.

I have no clue about health insurance.

The ratings services for life insurance are:

AM Best
Standard and Poor's
Fitch
Moody's

No other ratings services matter.

I assume you want term life insurance.

The cheapest/best carriers are going to be:

Lincoln Financial
Genworth
Banner
Prudential
Metlife
Axa

They are all basically equal so just go with the cheapest for your state, age, amount, and expected health rating.

The main stuff that will affect your rating is:

Smoking (anytime in the last ten years)
Heart disease
Cancer
Diabetes
Arthritis
Major depression (any suicidal plans in MD notes will get you declined period), Bi-polar spectrum illness, addiction, schizophrenia, or worse.
Family history of diabetes, heart disease, or cancer especially with a death prior to age 60 of your mother father or siblings.

If by some odd chance you want permanent insurance the only companies to go with are Northwestern Mutual or Guardian.

Getting insurance while unemployed may be quite difficult.

Why are you idiots turning this into a political debate?

Just so you know SandEagle, going to the ER with no insurance does not mean that they do not bill you, try and collect the bill, including by getting judgments against you and fucking your credit for a minimum of 7 years, wage garnishment, asset repossession, etc. Specific laws depend on the state, but if you have stuff, the providers will come after you.

ehealthinsurance.com

i used them along time ago in a galaxy far far away. skip the top entries it returns. they're paid ads.

i got Anthem. 2.5yrs after i dropped them baecause i got a job, a doc back billed me during the time i had anthem. apparently he didnt submit his claim within the specified time period and Anthem deneid the benefits. talking to the billing dept explaining it's not my problem they didnt file in time was useless.

i called anthem up. they took care of everything and treated me like i was still a paying customer. and the doc still didnt get paid :)

anthem customer service A+++++
would use again!

The OP is trying to find insurance that he's willing to pay for, thus I think its a safe assumption that he's able to pay for it.

I never mentioned people that don't pay for medical insurance because they can't afford it, only people that could afford it but chose to freeload. Nice attempt at a straw man argument though.

Check out Kaisers DHMO plans, they are high deductible, but very low premiums for what you get.

I'd recommend starting to get quotes and comparing all the numbers you get(price and coverage levels)

off the top of my head I'd check

humana
coventry
uhc
a blue in your area
aetna

more quotes = better cheddar.

This litterally made me laugh out loud.

What thread are you reading? Your advice in context is retarded.

Maybe he assumes people don't have stuff like emergency savings. Not everyone is stupid enough to live without some cash stashed to fall back on if something goes wrong.

That's what I remember from when I was last unemployed. I could sign up for COBRA retroactively if needed, and pay nothing if I didn't have something go wrong.
