Out of warranty Maxtor -- should I try calling them...

Just had a Maxtor HD fail...it's about a year out of warranty (a year and a day)...

Would calling them up and sounding depressed and/or angry do me any good? lol

After a year they wont help you...

I had a drive fail a month out of warranty - they helped me out by shipping me a replacement drive but the new drive has no warranty at all because the old one was out...

but a year and a month out - no...

Doesn't cost too much these days for a new HDD ... $100 bucks can get you a 300gb seagate hdd (that's after the $50 rebate of course) or you could just get a 120-160 gig for about 60-80 bucks with no rebate.

If you had reported any type of problem during the warranty period, you might be able to skate into the grey area.

Otherwise buy a new one. As others stated, the cost of fighting for a RMA will be more that the cost of a new one.

how big is it to even waste your time?

I could see one of the HP 15k U320's in my servers at about $1000 a pop (146GB), but a run of the mill EIDE/SATA < 300GB is about $100 after rebates...usually faster too from disc technology a year or so ago.

I bought a 120GB for OS and progs and 300GB for data/swap. Usually I am at 250GB free on the data drive....I am not into games and storing porn/dvds so much. I do have my whole music collection (300CDs) burned on my HD though for winamp.

It's a 160GB drive passed to me by my dad ~1.5 yrs ago.

I'm a college student & trying to save $ for tuition, lol.

But I think I'm gonna pick up the 160GB Seagate for $50...5yr warranty + awesome reliability ratings on storagereview.com should be a good proposition...

I have had a WD that started failing under warranty. By the time that WD declared it to be RMA the warranty expired. 2 days.

Maxtor has never given me problems on items RMAd.
