I've been out of the loop. At first i thought I might upgrade to an AGP card, but I think I might upgrade to a Core2Duo and go PCI-express. Right now i have A64 (S754) 1Gig, r9800pro.

What's the general consensus on video cards, I see X1xxx from ATI, and 7xxx from Nvidia. What's the difference between all the major models? Best bang for the buck in the high end?

I would like to get a high end card, and not have to upgrade for a while. Right now I'm only playing HL2, but I want to be able to turn on all the details, ideally at 1900x1200 (Dell 2405fpw as my monitor).
 
$400-Out of your mind = Nvidia 7950gx2

$300-$400 = Ati x1900xtx

$250-$300 = Ati x1900xt <- Best bang for your buck.

$200-$250 = Nvidia 7900gt or Ati x1800xt

Anything lower won't quite push your games at 1920x1200.
