I haven't built a PC in 6 years and have been primarily a console gamer for quite some time. Now, I've got new parts on their way to my house and will hopefully be built by the end of the week or on the weekend. So, can you guys recommend me some titles to take a look at? Any genre is fine... I know I want to check out Hellgate London at some point, even though I never heard anything super.

Also, anyone know which GFW titles have achievements tied to them? I wouldn't mind playing some of them.

Word.

edit: Just to note, I've already played through all the single player aspects of Orange Box (on the 360). Anything that'll take advantage of a DX10 card also would be cool.

For FPS games the only recent demo I can think of is UT3 demo if you want a decent-enough demo. It didn't turn my crank, but some people liked it.

As for full FPS games I really enjoyed Bioshock; great story and atmosphere. The graphics were only so-so IMO, but they were still decent.

Crysis of course is still a rig-killer, so if you are trying to stress your hardware, that's a good choice.

From an RPG perspective there is The Witcher: Demo available here I didn't like it myself, but a lot of people absolutely love it.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Demo here is very popular among the RTS crowd right now.

I'm sure others will be able to offer further suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll be sure to look into them all except for Bioshock, simply because I've already beaten that one also on the 360 (and wasnt overly impressed, even though I was entertained).

Out of the loop for 6 years but have modern hardware eh?

You, friend, are gonna have a good time.

Crysis, WoW + Expansion, Oblivion + expansion & mods, F.E.A.R., Microsoft SimX, Quake 4.

I'm not really even sure where to begin. Go ahead and get Peggle out of the way I guess :)

No thanks on WoW, I've already played plenty on my Apple laptop... Level 30ish was far enough. Also, played Oblivion minus expansions plenty on the 360. Quake 4 I did also get to play on my old machine, it ran crappy but was alright of a game... nothing spectacular in my opinion. I've heard Peggle is good, but isnt that a popcap game? heh, not really in need the hardware ;)

Sins of a Solar Empire is probably the most popular strategy game right now. Call of Duty 4 is probably the most popular action game at the moment.

hey there modeps

I would recommend Crysis very highly, depending on what kind of parts you have. It's the best single player game I've played in a long time.

UT3 if you like that kind of gameplay

There are very few games for windows games with achievements. Only Halo 2 and Shadowrun that I remember. I wouldn't recommend getting either.

STALKER is a great FPS RPG hybrid.

Honestly, what is the point in wanting achivements? Do they make your dick grow bigger or something? I just don't see the point. Would someone mind explaining it to me?

Here are some games you should try:

Bioshock
Sins of a Solar Empire
Crysis
Command and Conquer 3
Knights of the Old Republic
Knights of the Old Republic 2
Republic Commando
Warhammer 40k - Dawn of War (and its three expansions, Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and Soulstorm)

Its metagaming. They typically add longevity to a title if you try to collect them. Example: you suggested Bioshock. There's really not a reason to play though it multiple times after you find out what happens at the end, however achievements give you a reason to, like going through the game on Hard and not dying, or making sure you scour each level for all the audio diaries.

I can do that without achievements. I don't need the game to tell me what I just did. Look how many people go through Deus Ex again without killing anybody. You don't need achievements to do that.

Mods add life to a game for me.

Or getting the Big Boss rank in MGS or MGS2. Yeah, it was fun. I don't need a little bit of text in my profile to tell me that I did it. It seems like a lot of the achivements I see are kind of stupid...

Let's use Dead Rising as an example of really stupid achivements

Change into at least 20 different costumes (there is another achivement for changing into all available costumes, what's the point in rewarding just 20?)

Get 10 or 20 survivors out of the mall (another achivement exists for 50, wtf?)

Photograph 10 survivors (when another achivement exists for photographing 50)

Fire 1000 bullets (seriously?)

And that's just one example, there are numerous games with really stupid achievements that don't mean anything to anyone.

I wasn't asking for your opinion on achievements. I asked what GFW titles had them, but thanks for chiming in anyways with your holier-than-thou attitude.

HGL has achievements in it, though I'm not sure how many I never bothered to look into them.
