run spybot and make sure there isn't some rogue program taking up a bunch of resources. and maybe a virus check as well. just to be on the safe side.

Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and press Task Manager button. At the bottom it tells you how many processes are running, CPU Usage, and Mem Usage. Do this without any applications running (preferably after reboot) and see what it says. You shouldn't have more than 20-30 processes without any apps running and CPU usage should be at 0%. Mem Usage should be your total RAM - 120MB or so (for the operating system). If your numbers are very much higher than that, you may have problems.

Hey I have 35 processes running
CPU usage is like 1-2% most of the time sometimes going down to zero and every minute or so it spike up for a few seconds to 77-99%
I dont know how to tell how much total RAM is being used
Any ideas?

Update your virus definitions and do a full system scan ... get the latest version of Spybot and Ad-Aware, update definitions and scan with them as well....

I would never trust some mindless anti-virus program.

If you're running a XP/2K system, you *have* to be familiar with the process list in the task manager.

Well, you should try to figure out what each of them actually do. Some of them, like explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe, should be obvious. For others, you can try searching your hard drive to find where the .exe file actually lives. If it's in the Windows/System32 directory, odds are you need it.

If in doubt, you can also try typing the name of the process into Google and see what comes up.

A good resource for this kind of stuff is Black Viper's site. He goes into detail about what all the windows services do and which ones you can safely turn off to save resources.

how much free hard drive space do you have?

the commit charge in the bottom right corner of the task manager is how much memory you're using

Take a screenshot (PrntScn or something like that) of all your system processes and post it here.
