My 1.5x4 raid is running out of room, have less than 1tb left, I'm going to buy one of these to make sure they work with my raid adapters but seems like hitachi has tons of part # I can't tell if these are really different models or old vs new, they all seem to have similar specs

HDS724040ALE640 - Can't tell what the warranty is 3/5 yr ? - Newest one ?

I had a similar quandry when buying my WD Black, there are like 5 models of the thing.

Whenever I deal with a similar issue, I go to Newegg's reviews page and see which ones go back the longest. Not perfect, but similar.

Also, you can look and see if the HGST website shows which are the latest models.

OP- MFR warranty is a good indication of the company's confidence in the product (in my opinion). I would not mind paying a few extra bucks for a longer warranty and the piece of mind. Take a car for example - would you buy a $15k car with a 3 year warranty if you could have a similar model for $17k with a 5 or 7 year warranty?

Warranty is important because my 1.5 seagates still have another yr of warranty from the 5 yr we used to get, I had to rma 2 drives early this year. Good thing I didn't have to pay to get replacements.

I have 12 of those 1.5 and I can combine the 12 1.5tb drive array into 4 of these hitachi 4tb providing controller works with the new drive.

I end up buying the first one in retail packaging for 250, cheaper than the bare drives, it was also the only one listed on the website, the other two was pdf data sheet or not on the website.

What controller is it? I had an LSI controller which was only about 2-3 years old and it couldn't recognize drives larger than 2TB.

If it does work that's going to be a really long rebuild time for the 4x4TB RAID5. I hope you are backing the data up to another source as well.

Why not go for 3 tb drives?

The price/gig is much less than those hard drives you linked.

HGST 4TB can be had for closer to $200 than $300.

Did you check for a firmware & BIOS update?

which HGST drives support CCTL ?
is there any list/table for such info ?

since the op mentioned raid, i'm assuming that could be important.

Those newegg H3IK4000.... drives are retail packs stripped for just the drives. One is a single pack the other is a 20-pack. These retail kits have a three year warranty. All the desktop Hitachi drives I've seen have had a three year warranty. They have 5 800GB platters. They should have real world performance at least as good as any 7200 rpm drive.

I'd like to have a couple.

Yep, LSI indicated the RAID card (SAS1078) had a hardware limitation so that drives larger than 2TB could never be supported. I was pretty surprised to hear that as my much cheaper, older consumer RAID card, a 3ware 9650SE, can even recognize drives > 2TB.

I'm using the HP P410i SAS controller.

Basically I build a fleet of HP Microserver file servers and ideally would like to upgrade the fleet to 4tb drives. That'll be 12tb each server if the 4TB works out

So after talking to HGST, only retail drives have warranty. I wonder if the OEM they're talking about is bare drives or OEM like Dell/HP/etc.

Thank you for contacting HGST Support Center

HGST Internal hard drives have a 3 year warranty when purchased as retail drives or IDK's

OEM Hard Drives do not have warranty from HGST.

Price doesn't really matter, I rather have storage space and not worry about it..

going from 4.5tb to 9tb is good but going from 4.5tb to 12tb is even better, it'll only cost me 400 extra and not have to upgrade when i hit 9tb ahead of time. I estimate 250 for 4tb vs 150 for 3tb..

I will save time on migrating from 9TB to 12TB, my next upgrade is 24TB off TDK's 6tb drive announcement in 2014. I hope i dont use up the space that fast. Never know

so spend the $130 on a M5014 w/bbu on ebay

Or maybe a cheaper M1015 if BBU not required. I've got a Dell version with same SAS2008 chip running in IT mode. They are generally $50-$100 but have tended towards the latter lately.

So after talking to HGST, only retail drives have warranty. I wonder if the OEM they're talking about is bare drives or OEM like Dell/HP/etc.

They must be referring to the warranty being provided instead by Dell/HP/etc. I routinely check drive warranties and the bare 7K4000 I got awhile ago was confirmed as three-years.
