Don't listen to Sampson, he's just your typical internet savant.

Today's society isn't better or worse, it's just different. Certain values have changed but the fundamental concept of being human still exists - the pursuit of happiness.

You want to contribute to society? Get married, have some kids, and raise a happy, healthy family. Just note that having money is not a necessity, and too much of it can and often does corrupt. But having it, and being responsible with it can make that path a lot easier. And working a 9-5 job allowing you that luxury could end up being worth it, so long as it doesn't interfere with the happy, healthy family part.

Just get your priorities straight.

Why is your opinion any more worthy than mine? You're just as much of an "internet savant" than I. You are just the typical "internet savant" who feels they know more than the person who's opinion they are contesting, therefore making their opinion more valueable. People live different ways and there is no right and wrong way of living. The way you suggest living is neither more or less valuable than any way of life I suggested to the OP. Since the OP seems to view his current standing and path in society with disdain, I suggest the polar opposites of what he currently lives. I know it's hard for you to understand, but at least give it a try genius.
BTW, your useage of the word "savant" is very poor in this thread.

owning a subsistence farm and doing nothing else would make me arguably less valuable to society.
Why? By what measure are you viewing your "contributions to society"?

level of involvement i suppose.
right now im a consuming hermit more or less.
more interested in flagstones for my yard than world hunger.

best at? Materialism?

Exactly. We do indeed rock. We have so much kickass ******...there is no way anyone will ever forget us -- for our intellectual, philosophival, material, social, political, artistic, musical, and engineering achievements. For that matter, if we fall future civilizations will look back on us with awe that is not even rivaled by rome.

In summary, our society is indeed the best.

Well, you and your family are the most important people on the face of the planet. Not the starving africans, or the dying arabs/jews in the middle east.

If you're really that concerned with socio-economic world issues then join the americorps or red cross and volunteer your services.
I find that the vast majority of people who say they are really truely concerned with world issues like hunger just like the IDEA of being concerned with it. When it comes to actually doing something about it, they won't even lift a finger. They are concerned with global warming but purchasing goods made in china, factory farmed produce, non-local goods, driving inefficient cars, not car pooling, and doing just about everything your typical energy hog does. I guess it makes them feel good to be pseudo-activists, but in reality they are just kidding themselves and trying to deal with endless western guilt.

So be educated about world issues, understand them, have compassion, but you don't have to be in the front lines of action unless you REALLY feel the need to. Or just keep on keepin on!
😀
