Our governor proves yet again that he can't handle a Nextel Cup stock car :-)

MAY 10, 2005 -- Governor Mike Easley wasn't injured. However, his pride may be hurt after a wild ride in a stock car.

To promote a Nascar celebration, Easley sped out of the executive mansion's driveway in Jimmie Johnson's number 48 Chevrolet race car.

He quickly lost control and spun off into a curb, narrowly missing another car and a pole.

With a little assistance Easley pulled the car off the curb and navigated the few blocks to the legislative building.

This was the same car he wrecked two years ago in another promotional event at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord.

Easley missed hitting a silver Mercedes sedan and a utility pole by mere inches. No one was hurt, including Easley, who wasn't wearing a helmet.

"He came dashing out of the gates of the mansion, lost it some there and then corrected with panache," said bystander Cherie Braun. "He just missed hitting something by the skin of his teeth ... It was a Kleenex away."

Of course, aggressive driving is nothing new for Easley, who crashed a stock car into the wall at Lowe's Motor Speedway two years ago this week.

One of those cases where he'd be a better team owner than a driver.

And people say its easy to drive a stock car like they do in nascar, and that anyone could go in circles all day long--this gov couldnt even go out of a driveway.
