Our first Vegas trip - which shows do you recommend?

In a couple weeks my wife and I will be going on our first trip to Vegas. I already did a lot of research and have our accommodations taken care of. We?ll be doing 4 nights at the Mirage and a couple at the Bellagio. I figure since we don?t go out there often we?ll splurge a little and have a nice place in the center of the Strip. Plus, we'll be there mostly during the week when the rates are fairly reasonable. My wife wanted a nice pool and the Mirage definitely seems to have that from everything I read (Mandalay looked interesting too, just a bit farther out.) We?ll be bringing some money for gambling, but mostly just want to relax and enjoy ourselves.

Even after digging through all the various Vegas sites I still don't know what to do about shows and thought I might toss this one out to the ATOT crowd since every other Vegas thread seemed to have been about accommodations.

What big name show would you recommend if you had to see one just one?
My wife kind of leans toward the Cirque-type stuff. But for roughly ~$100/ticket for the big name shows, I just want to be sure it?s worth it.

Any smaller shows you?d recommend catching?
Strip clubs don?t count btw, although she did say she might not be averse to one of the burlesque-style shows which seem to be making a comeback.

Feel free to toss in any other general Vegas advice if you'd like.

$100/ticket is pretty normal for the big shows. I paid about that much to see Blue Man there. I would just pony up the cash. Theres always Celine Dion. 😀

I thought Penn & Teller were great.

After seeing Blue Man Group for $90, I was disappointed. I thought it was way over priced and not all that great. My wife thought the same.

I don't mind spending money when I'm on vacation. I usually splurge too much. I just don't want to shell out $200+ and be totally disappointed like we've done to a lesser extent on some Broadway productions we've seen in the past. And I love my wife, but there's no WAY I'd be going to see Celine Dion (plus I didn't see any available tickets for her show the nights I was looking anyway. 😀)

Hrmm... I paid $45 for the show in Chicago and I was dissapointed by the show.

celine is sold out until august.

there are several cirque shows (there's one at treasure island, which is right next to the mirage, and also one at the bellagio)

magic shows: lance burton at the monte carlo, penn and teller at the rio

music: WAYNE NEWTON! or tom jones! i REALLY want to see celine the next time i'm going.

there's also siegfried and roy, but they are definitely pricey but cool magic and tigers!

wow, im going to the mirage in a couple weeks too!,
ive been alot, all the shows are amazing and very much worth the money. i saw mystic

You'll see booths advertising "free tourist info" or "free show tickets". These are all timeshare pitches. You'll get free show tickets, but they'll tie up an hour (or more) of your time trying to sell you a time share.

It's not a bad way to catch some cheesy shows if you don't mind wasting your time with their sales pitch.

Hard to answer as it depends on your specific tastes but go see all the FREE ones for sure. Pirate show, Volcano, Downtown Lights, Caesars Living Statues and so on.

Seigfreid and Roy if you like animals.
Circ, Mystique if you like that type performance.

FX Show at MGM was pretty good if its still there.

But definitely O. It's far more amazing thab Mystere.

It's worth the $100, IMO.

agreed. for $15 more, you can see O and it's much better than Mystere.

Thanks for all the feedback. It's definitely looking like O the more I read about it and the more I hear comments like this. My wife will be pleased.

We're definitely going to take in all the free attractions like the pirate battle (which I heard is closing down after July?), the volcano, etc. And hopefully we'll be able to upgrade to a room with a view at the Bellagio so we can watch the fountains from our room at night. If not, we can always watch it outside with all the other peasants. 😉

Just got back from Vegas. It was freaking 100 degrees. As everybody says, "O", Mysterie and 3rd recommendation is Siegfried and Roy.

The best buffet I had in all my trip to Vegas has to be the one by Paris Casino. The food actually was fresh.

Good luck at the tables and make reservations early for the shows.
