I liked this bit particularly:

There are other elements to the Copyright bill, that are aimed at ensuring consumers are not treated like copyright pirates and copyright pirates are not treated like consumers. They include:

- Making it legal for people to record TV or radio programs in order to play them at a more convenient time.

- Legalising 'format shifting' of material such as music, newspapers, books - meaning people can put CD's they own onto their iPods or MP3 players;

- Giving schools, universities, libraries more flexibility to use copyright material for non-commercial purposes; and

- Helping people with disabilities access copyright material.

The new provisions in the Bill for consumers and for parody and satire will commence after Royal Assent in mid-December.

This is legal in the US.

This is legal in the US unless you have to break copy protection to do it.

The US does this.

- Helping people with disabilities access copyright material.

Apparantly Americans aren't even willing to make money easier to use for handicapped people. :Q

The US gives schools, universities, libraries more flexibility? How can you say that without knowing what we can and can't do right now? ;)

The recording thing is just clearing up a gray area that exists currently as i understand it...

EDIT: i'm not going to play your little 'we're better than you' game tho, i was kinda pointing out that it is cool that he is actually on the ball with issues like this :D

Hmmm... that's odd. In a recent conversation with administrators at my school, I was told that it was illegal for us to copy our VHS tapes to a DVD format (simplifying playing them in our classrooms, since we all have computers networked to large screen televisions or DLP projectors.)

Are you *sure* it's legal to transfer from one medium to another? Or were the people I talked to in error??
