Some of the members here dislike Carmax but I live in a state, TN, where the amount dealers charge for the bs pure profit dealer doc/admin fee has exploded. The range is $600. to $1300. for new and used cars, and very non-negotiable. They give you some bs sob story about the possibility of being sued if they don't charge you the fee. Some states, i.e. CA, NY, have put a cap on this fee. TN has no cap and the fee is not required by law.

Carmax does not charge any dealer doc fee for used vehicles. In states , i.e., MD, WI, where they sell new vehicles they charge $99.

We decided to trade our 2008 Nissan Versa SL HB in for a SUV. One good thing about Carmax is that you can check their inventory on-line and then go and try out multiple brands, i.e, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Toyota Rav4, Ford Escape. We (my wife) liked the Ford Escape SE with the 2.0l turbo. With its options the Edmunds, NADA, KBB, dealer price for the Escape averaged $21,700. Yeah, I know this price is just ballpark. The car was in excellent shape, had 9K on, it, and they wanted $21,000., an ok price.

The Edmunds, NADA, KBB average clean trade in for our Nissan was $6630., $7750. private party. They offered us $7500. and a $525 credit if we purchased a vehicle from them. It has 58K on it and besides mats, only standard options, a few parking lot dinks, and stone chips on the front bumper and hood.
Here's the part where I think Carmax tries to fool customers into thinking they are getting more for their trade in. They never mentioned that the $525. credit is the TN 7% sales tax reduction credit for your trade-in. So I was lead to believe that they were going to give me $8025. for my trade-in. I thought wow that's a great trade-in amount let's do it. TN is one of those states that allow you a trade-in tax credit. http://www.realcartips.com/selling/010-states-that-allow-trade-in-tax-credit.shtml When the saleman started filling out the invoice I then realized that I was getting $7500. not $8025. for the Nissan. Still not a bad trade-in price but very deceptive. The salesman swore that he told us, which he did not, that the $525 was the sales tax credit. Of course they try to sell you an extended warranty which starts at $1399. and up dependent on the deductible. I choose not to take it. Other than the TN state sales tax, and title and transfer fee there were no other fees. Except for the bit of trickery over the trade-in price it was a pleasant buying experience.

Pros: The trade-in amount and price of the new vehicle were fair. Of course this should be judged on a case to case basis. Could I have gotten more than $7500. on Craig's list for my car, maybe, but I would have not gotten the tax credit. My car will probably be on their lot for sale this week for ~$10.5K, but that's capitalism.
There is very little pressure from the salesman. Since everything is no haggle there is no negotiating, I kind of miss that though, no running back and forth to check with the manager. You work with one salesman through the whole process. No TN dealer doc fee.
I purchased my vehicle at the Knoxville Carmax. They will transfer vehicles to Knoxville from their TN Carmax stores, and their Norcross (Atlanta), GA store for free. They charge a fee to transfer a vehicle from their other stores. If you decide you do not want the vehicle the transfer fee is non-refundable.

Cons: I found some of their vehicle prices to be high. You may be able to get a better deal elsewhere, but in TN with the dealer doc fee it may be a wash. You may be able to get a better price for your car selling it privately, but you lose the sales tax credit.
Not sure if my salesman just forgot to mention that the $525. credit was a sales tax credit or if this is their normal business practice, a bit deceptive.
Even though we paid cash you still have to go back and see the financial officer, but it's just to sign a few more papers, no pressure from him to buy anything.

I don't know of anyone who specifically dislikes carmax.

They sell good, fairly well-inspected cars. If you're not a car person there isn't a better place to buy from. Yes, you pay more, but you get peace of mind with it.

Only thing against them is they tend to be a bit overpriced. You can do a fair bit better elsewhere if you negotiate.

This is true and I stated it in my post. I tried this in TN and found a few dealers that were selling an almost identical vehicle for a lower price but their $600. or more dealer doc fee put them over Carmax's price. And to make it worse the dealer doc fee is also state taxable.
TN has some weird vehicle tax laws that vary by county. You pay a 7% state tax on the purchase price, and for purchases in excess of $1,600. an additional state tax of 2.75% is added up to a maximum of $44., then each county has a local sales tax from 1.75% -2.75% on a single item up to $1600.; and then some counties have what they call an annual registration Wheel tax that can be as high as $80. Luckily I live in a county that does not have a Wheel tax.

We don't have a state income tax in TN but we get hit hard with sales taxes.

I like carmax for getting a quick hassle free cash offer. I then keep that on me when going to other dealers.

On my GTI I got $2K more as a trade in elsewhere and was offered $1.5K more by Ford to just outright buy it without buying anything else versus carmax.

Oh and the $525 thing should have been clearly printed in their offer packet when they went over it with you.

Awesome review! I've been helping purchasing cars for friends and family for decades. Perhaps I'm getting older, as I am begining to value my time and am more willing to pay for convenience. Yes it's a rare mis-convenience to sell your car, but it sounds as if CarMax is doing right.

They are a business so they have to make money but it seems like there's less shananigans then going to a dealer and dealing with their theatrics.

I plan on selling our Prius to CarMax, unless the dealership offers more on a trade. Figured it'd be a good idea to get the quote from CarMax before going to the dealership to buy.

CarMax offered me 6500 for a truck while dealership offered 6000. Told the dealership to beat it, and they countered with 6700. :)

Their salespeople use a Carmax invoice template that automatically calculates everything. The $525 credit showed up on the invoice like this ($525) with no explanation of what it was for. When I questioned the salesman about it he told me that he did not know how the program was applying the credit. On the invoice it showed my trade-in as $7500. On the invoice the sales tax had been reduced by $7500. x 7% = $525. The salesman had absolutely no clue how the sales tax is calculated on a vehicle in TN. He told me that he did not have to know since the program does everything for him automatically. He knows now after I explained it to him.
The invoice should have showed the purchase price as $21000 - $7500. = $13500. and then the sales tax calculated on $13500. It did not. It showed the purchase price as $21000. and then the sales tax line was right under that. The line that showed my trade-in price was almost at the bottom of the page.

If you think that was confusing, I am betting you never had a chance to look at HUD settlement statement at closing or you never bothered to look at the numbers on it.

I have. I purchased a foreclosure a few years ago and had to deal with an escrow company in CA even though the house was in OH. I had to have them redo the HUD settlement statement 6X due to mistakes, mostly about the back taxes owed on the house; and a house I recently sold in WV was purchased with an FHA loan, so another HUD settlement statement, but this one they got right the first time. I always go over a contract line by line and make sure I understand exactly what each fee or charge is for, and it's correct, before I sign it.

Carmax should change their invoice template to make it easier for the customer to understand and see exactly how the sales tax credit he is receiving for his trade-in is being applied to the total sales tax amount, and they should train their salespeople on how the sales tax is calculated. I also spoke to 2 people back in their business office and neither of them knew how to calculate the TN sales tax on a vehicle. I had to use one of their computers and bring up the Knox county clerk website to show them how to calculate the tax. https://www.knoxcounty.org/clerk/motorvehicle/sales_calculator.php

I've never used them but obviously there is a business model there that makes them money off their customers.

I've gone through USAA the last couple cars I've purchased so I really don't think I'd ever use CarMax.

I don't like Carmax anymore.

To put it simply their inspections and promises to sell you a car without hidden damage are outright lies.

I might sell a car to Carmax in the future if they give me a good price, but I would never buy one from them again.
