It was just the jar breaking, but that's enough. I'm looking for recommendations now. I want something that will powderize fruit seeds but that costs less than a Vitamix. Primary use will be all-fruit smoothies, but a nice blender opens up possibilities of exotic dressings and soups.
 
i've got a waring, best blender ever. though it won't cook soup for you like a vitamix will.
 
I'm curious to see if there are any quiet blenders now. I saw a commercial for a quiet garbage disposal which made me think of this here.

Aunt owns a kitchen aid that she has been using for years. Loud but it gets the job done.
