Ouff...Duron 700 won't POST -- not even overclocking yet

My roommate recently received his ABIT motherboard and Duron 700. We installed it with just a stick of memory, a vidoe card, and a floppy drive. It booted up just fine and loaded the OS off the floppy. After fiddling around for a bit, we shut off the system and tried to reboot. The fans spooled up but nothing else. No video signal, no beep error codes, nothing.

We reset the processor, took the board out of the case to rule out a short, and sacrificed a goat. Still no good. Every once in awhile, everything will work fine, but this is rare.

I don't have any experience with Durons, but my gut-feeling at this point is that it is some sort of thermal issue. We've applied a new layer of thermal paste between the chip and the generic heat-sink, but this hasn't improved the situation. Any ideas or suggestions of things to try? Thanks.

if you have a friend with a socket a system, ask if you can borrow it, and switch the parts around to see if it's a cpu or mobo problem

It may be the power supply. The socket A mother boards can be really particular about
the PS s' used sometimes, so much so that AMD has a listing for approved PS s' for Duron
and Athlon systems. When I uppgraded to a KT7 & Duron 600 I could not even get it to start up,
only the fans would turn. But after replacing my old power sup. everything worked perfectly.
