Ouch

So we were checking out the campus at around 11PM when a couple girls in our group had to pee. So they find some woods and they go and pee. The rest of us find a ledge to sit on and within a few seconds I heard a buzz and felt something pinch me on the arm. It hurt like an absolute motherfuck and when I swatted it off it went for my neck. I GTFO and within like three seconds another kid got bit. Four out of the six of us waiting on the ledge ended up getting bit and we were all like WTF because it hurt a lot more than any bug bite we've gotten before (no black widow victims here). One kid got bit through his shirt. And the girls who were peeing in the woods were untouched.

It was the most painful thing I've felt in a while. I swelled up and got pretty puffy and I couldn't even bend my arm for a while. Fortunately the pain went away after a few hours but ouch though.

PS - I'm only assuming it was a horsefly because it was dark and I didn't really see it. But there was no stinger so it wasn't a bee, and it hurt a lot more than a wasp or hornet, and the bite was like a hole.

the chicks pee'ing doesn't seem that relevent to the story

but you mention it, alot

what were the chicks doing again?

I mentioned it because they were the ones that should've gotten bitten, not us.

Horesflies really don't bite. Deer flies on the other hand are both aggressive and painful little SOB's.

Maybe they were deerflies, I'm not sure I've never seen a deerfly before though.

Look for the "triangle wings". The ones around (Midwest) usually have an orangish/reddish color at the tips of the wings. They are VERY aggressive and will buzz around your head for hours waiting for the right time to land on your kneck or shoulders and digging in.

Horse flies usually aren't that agrressive, at least around here.

I'd vote for hornet or wasp, as they can sting without leaving the stinger, and can choose to sting repeatedly. A horsefly bite should feel no different than being poked by a needle.

Horseflies also tend to circle around your head several times before landing.

Maybe you've got friendly horseflies. Back home, after you've left the house for about 5 seconds, you'll have one orbiting your head in no time. They land and bite quickly, and damn they move fast. Yes, they're horseflies. I'm familiar with deerflies too - they also suck. :|

Ah, lovely nature. All it wants is some delicious blood. Is that too much to ask?🙂

This a med sized horsefly. I've seen them an easy double this.
Horsefly

As for not biting, you are correct. They usually just "cut", fly away and let thier victim bleed, and then come to suck the blood. Although some do just sit there, and cut into you and wait. But it is totally diff on how a mosquito pierces, inserts and then sucks

You never want to get stung by one of these Ants/Pre Wasp. The stinger is 3/4-1 inch in length. I've seen them around while mowing. The next time I see one I'll make sure to take some good pics of the stinger exposed. Oh, it also emits a buzzing noise when you hold it down.

Aren't wasp stings relatively small though? This thing on my arm was like a 1mm hole. And wasps/hornets generally aren't as aggressive and don't actually sting you unless you seriously invade their space. These guys actually followed us as we were heading for the hills...we were a good 100+ feet away when the others were getting bitten.

Yeah those buggers get pretty big, I've seen horseflies before and they scare me more than bees or wasps do.

What do the "cuts" generally look like? Is it like a slash or a hole?

More like a nick. You see what mosquitos do, it's very small, just makes you bleed on the surface..... (poke yourself with a needle an 1/8 down, will you bleed? Si 🙂 I always wanted to catch one of those huge purple/bluish tinted Horseflies and show it off. Used to catch the big black ones out of the air with my hand but never a purple one....... One of these days!
I loves Bugs!

100% True....... If you catch any type of horsefly, they will not bite you when grasped in your hand. Go for it..... Try it out. I cannot recall how many I've caught in 20 years but never gotten bit yet.

A horse or deer (bigger version) fly will leave an irregular bite mark as they slice into your skin lapping up blood at the same time. From your story, you most likely pissed off a bunch of wasps/hornets.

I was stung by one of these: http://lloyd22.com/v/Other_Ins...sp_MG_8599-01.jpg.html

They are hard to spot and are about 1.5 inches long. Ouch indeed.

Hmm thinking about how the bite turned out maybe it wasn't a horse or deerfly. But I've been stung by bees and normal wasps/hornets (like yellowjackets) before and it was never this bad. I've never been touched by anything ridiculous like that black wasp before though.

They can be.

Sounds like a hornet then. Look up "bald faced hornets" on Google. They're dark, big, and mean. They will sting if you stand near their nest. I walked past a nest that was attached to the bottom of a high-roof porch. It was at least 10 feet above my head. One of them stung my ankle.

Wasps can leave a decent sting though. I had one sting me three times, all right next to each other. It wasn't even near a nest, I think I just brushed against it in the lawn.

Yeah, I was playing on a slip n' slide back in the day and while sliding, I got a glimpse of that giant black wasp at the end of the plastic. Needless to say, he stung me once in the hand and once in the hip before I could even get up...

There are also these: http://www.pbase.com/broe/image/70832404 which I tempted fate by getting a few macro shots of one day. They were pretty docile while they fed on these flowers but I'm glad I didn't get to test out their sting. Also about 1.5 to 2 inches in length...

The only thing worse than a Hornet is a Bumblebee. Aggressiveness for both are way up there though. Been stung by a Hornet on the arm and a Bumblebee under my arm beneath my shirt. They've always said the Hornet is the most agressive but the Bumblebee takes the cake for protecting thier ground nests and will chase your azz a long distance.

I've never actually seen a bumblebee nest. I only ever see them when they're feeding on nectar, and then they're so docile that I can touch them without them caring.

Now hornets, I get nests of them in the yard all the time. They're like small landmines when I go over them with the lawnmower. The mower pisses them off, and they fly out just as I'm walking over.

From your description, I hope I never encounter a protective bumblebee.

Generally when I run into bumblebees they are just feeding and honestly don't care about anything. They make great photo subjects and I've stood in shrubs full of bumblebees and just stood there and shot leisurely. But in all honesty I don't think I even know what a real bumblebee nest looks like (only in cartoons).

I agree that most that you run into sucking on a flower are nice to watch and won't harm you unless you pick one up........ You get near a Bumblebee nest and you'd better run! No Optimus Prime to save you now 🙂

Same for most wasps. Paper/Mud........ You can get 3ft away from thier nests with no problem. Well they do tend to STARE at ya' and make you know that they can see you

http://sci.agr.ca/ecorc/diptera/bf13-dp13_e.htm

The males feed on nectar and don't bother us.

One cow can lose about one-quarter of a litre of blood per day under heavy attack, with more blood lost from the bite wounds.

It's people like you that make people afraid of horseflies and believe BS.

"Literally" remove a chunk of flesh? In movies maybe. The link you provided is a "small" species/double the size of a housefly. Even the ones over an inch long don't remove a chunk of flesh!

Go poke yourself with a small needle! That's why it hurts so much. Same feeling/less mental!
