had my wisdom teeth pulled on wednesday morning. I'm on day 4 and one side of my face is still slightly swollen. Is this normal?

Also, I've heard that you KNOW if you have dry socket because the pain is excruciating. Is that true? My jaw still has a dull ache without painkillers, but it's not a sharp pain.

And finally, my breath is starting to peel the paint in the apartment. I've tried cleaning my tongue and brushing a little bit, but can't do a very good job because i still can't open my mouth all the way. You think i'll be ok to go out in public by next Wednesday or so? I have a job interview next week and i don't want to kill the interviewer...

The worst will probably be over in less than 3 days. Then resume your usual brushing/scraping, mouthwash routine.

I empathize, the only good time after the procedure was waking up still under the effects of the anesthetics.

Its different for different people, my face was assymetically swollen -- I mean, I'd have looked downright CUTE if my cheeks were chubby-balanced, but no, one swollen side like you.

Take lots of breathmint, use mouthwash -- the reason for the breath (I'm sure you know) is because foodstuff's caught in the space your teeth used to be. I basically rinsed after every meal or snack. Eventually (maybe a couple weeks) your gums will fill back up and your breath will be fine again.

He is already on the fourth day.

Have you even called the dentist/oral surgeon who performed the extractions? I yes, what did he say. If no, why not?

I guess I can't offer much... I had all 4 out while I was awake, had no swelling, and was fine (eating turkey dinner) within 2 days...

Maybe you could just use some breath mints or something?

And the mild ache is normal.

You guys are lucky. I had all 4 impacted, took those navy docs about 1.5 hours. And when i say "docs" i really mean "18 year olds just out of HS who are responsible for my dental care."

When i got out of there, my face was so swollen i could look down and SEE my chin. I only had local anesthesia so i was awake the whole time. And actually my lips hurt more than my teeth do, because they're all cut up from those guys yanking and pulling.

Anyway, i'm going to assume then that i don't have dry socket since im not in extreme pain. I hope my breath is ok by the time i interview next week...

You may have an infection. I got one about 3 days after having mine cut out (Navy docs also). They may have to cut it a little and stick a wick down in it to draw out the secretion and put you on antibiotics. What sucked most is when he cut it open and pressed on it squirting all the puss in my mouth.

oh THANKS for that reassurance there. Hahaha. What symptoms should i look for? Wouldn't an infection be really painful? *fingers crossed*

It wasn't painful. The swelling on one side just wouldn't go down. When are you sceduled for a checkup? If the swelling hasn't gone down at least a little in four days there is probably infection. Sorry didn't know we were here to make you feel better about your swollen jaw and bad breath. :D

Took me about 7-8 days to completely recover, I also had a dull pain on the 4th day, not sure about breath because no one talks to me.

Elevate your head when you sleep, it should help somewhat. Also try rinsing your mouth with warm salt water if it doesn't hurt to.

Well the swelling has gone down a lot, actually. It's just not 100% gone like the other side. If i press my hand to my face, i can feel a slight bump. Of course, the swollen side WAS a lot more difficult to extract during the surgery. It's not really noticable by just looking.

The f*cked up lips, however, still look like a got in a fight with holyfield...and lost. ;)

They didnt schedule a follow up appt but i'll likely go in on tuesday if they're open.

Ok that sounds about right. Except that my breath is so bad, I can smell it. I can't even get away from it.

I've been doing that, as well as rinsing with salt water 3x a day. Everything LOOKS ok, and i suspect the bad breath is just because i can't brush back there. But GOD it's bad haha.
