Ouch, painful week for my portfolio

In the last 3 business days my portfolio dropped almost 25%. I was fairly well diversified, but majority of my losses were caused by oil and financial stocks, as well as a far east mutual fund.

I've been an active investor for the past 6 years and this is the worst span of 3 days I've ever seen. This includes a post 9/11 sell off as well.

I understand your pain but I tend to ignore drops like this with anticipation that over the next 2-3 years I would've forgot it ever happened.

I am in for the long haul. You have to just stop checking it.

Sounds like you needed more S&P 500 index fund shares in your portfolio. It's only down about 4% from the 2007 peak, and is still up a little from last year.

Yall need to learn how to hedge. I'm up these past couple weeks, sold some covered calls and bought some puts.

Ah, I don't track it daily I just had a number for May.

It's still up from December 2006 though. And about the same as it was in August when I last added shares.

If your portfolio dropped 25% in the last 3 business days, then you're not well diversified.

I don't agree with that at all. Define well diversified?

Yeah, that was my thought as well. I'm only down 5% for the last month, and still up almost 5% for the year.

Post your portfolio.
(No need to give us exact dollar amounts...%'s of your entire holdings are fine)

In the classical sense you are diversified but you have a bunch of random stocks. But the culprits are your chinese MFs, ETFC and GRP.

NE dropped pretty bad over last 2 days. Chinese MF is doing pretty well, actually. I'm still in decent shape for the year but in 3 days portfolio dropped most of its gains for the year.

6 individual stocks and a mutual fund is far from diversified.

I think 6 stocks is about as many as a part-time investor can maintain. Any more and you probably aren't doing as much research and just picking random stocks. A lot of experienced investors recommend not over-diversifying for that very same reason (Peter Lynch is one of them)
