OUCH!! Just got mt SAT scores back :(

I gotta 580 in Verbal and a 590 in math for a total of 1170, i was expecting MUCH higher scores......well i dont know i suck at standardized testing.......howd u guys do and how much of a impact does it have(of course ill be taking it again), i was planing to goto Univ of MI

**edit**
i have career gpa of 3.9 and im a junior right now
edited the scores to put the actual b4 i just guessed, the total is still 1170 tho

SAT's are completely meaningless. A strong well-rounded transcript from HS helps more than anything, IMHO.

Those scores put you in the lower 25 percent of the admitted class, but you still have a chance. Apply and see.

My sister just got her's also 1560. Makes me feel stupid.

How are your grades? Their average gpa is 3.7, so if you are higher it might help. Also are you really good at any sports that they recruit for?

It's a well known fact that the SAT's are designed for white males. If you are a person of color or female you were left out of the equation. Occasionally, a non-white non-male scores exceptionally well and is/are showered with scholarships and grants. Keep trying, you might be next to win the jackpot.

i got a 1030.

be ready to hear from all the fools bragging about their 1590's and 1600's.. and maybe their million dollar jobs and supermodel gf's etc etc. 🙂

Take them again, especially if you get a chance to brush up on your skills in the interim. I knew several people who did poorly on the first go-round, then hardened their resolve, and ended up with 1400+ on the sum (and that was back in the "old days," before the 60-point inflation).

The average person shows no improvement with a retake; but the average person doesn't do anything to improve his/her skills before the retake. If you were feeling "out of it" on the test day, you may do much better on the next go-round.

keep retaking the test. and consider taking an SAT-taking class or at least getting a bunch of practice tests and try to emulate and prepare for the exam as many times as you can. work on your time management. you would probably need at least a 1250 to get into Michigan unless your transcript is unusually good or you can stand out by some sort of extra-curricular activity.

Btw, between my first time and 3rd time taking the test, my score went up 100 points, so there's probably hope for you too.

no, it's actually just a well known fact that many people who do poorly on the SAT's think that it was biased.

Unless the person happens to be Asian.:frown:

that would be me.. thanks to my 1600, i graduated from yale (top of my class).. married a super model, and i drive to my 6 figure paying job in my new Viper everday. 🙂

SIIIKE(i wish)
SAT's really are meaningless.. the smartest professor i've ever had only scored a 900.. now he's a doctor, psycholigist, and brilliant guy.. best teacher i've ever had.

The only thing my sat scores helped for was a scholarship my school offers to everybody who scores above 1100.

gopunk, that was precisely my tongue in cheek point. Thank you for pointing it out to anyone who might not have caught the sarcasm.

"It's a well known fact that the SAT's are designed for white males. "

Well known among the rest of your pals in the psychiatric ward?

That's it, they put "white math" in there... haha!

Ok, that was sarcasm, missed me on that one. See the thing is there's actually people out there that agree with that sentiment. 😉

Your pissed because you got an 1170? You I hope you know that the nations avaerage is a 1000. You scored well above that. Do you live in Michigan? If you do, then your SAT score will not have as big as an effect as you think it will have.

uh.... i think your sarcasm was a little too subtle....

EDIT:
HappyPuppy, hehe - didn't see that it was sarcasm. So in that case, treat this rebuttal like your statement had no sarcasm.

That is the stupidest, most-ignorant flame against the SATs. They are NOT designed for white males. They are designed to evaluate anyone's high school education. The College Board has been sued numerous times for gearing the tests towards males and white people - and they've been forced to do many changes.. Among those - one story about black culture (sic, Asian, Spanish anyone?) and one story about women. These do nothing for races. Race is not an issue for the damn test. Bottom line: if you are smart, and any race, you will get a good score on the SAT.

Yes, there's no denying that black people generally score worse than white people on the SATs... but there's also no denying that a higher percentage of black people are in jail than white people. These scores just say we need to improve their schools! Don't blame the test that reveals that. The few well-off black people that go to private schools score on par with all the white people that take it.

Also, women generally get the same scores as men.

yourharddrive, I would recommend taking it MORE THAN ONCE. It should go up about 100 points or so just by sheer experience. Also, get the PRINCETON REVIEW for the SAT.. It's the best test prep guide ever.

<< I gotta 530 in Verbal and a 550 in math for a total of 1170 >>

take em again. They get easier every time to a certain point. I probably went up by a hundred points every time I took them.

But don't stress them. With your grades, providing there are some tough classes mixed in there, you'll get into UMich unless you're really unlucky. If you take it again and just get a couple more points you'll get in no problem.

You might want to brush up on your math though. Unless its some kind of new SAT math that gets from 530+550 to 1170.

I got a 1265 back in my Freshmen year when I first took the SATs, but of course I wanted to take them again so I ended up taking a course at Sylvan Learning Center, which consisted of basically A LOT of practice material, doing it over and over.. and over again until you become so conditioned to the questions that all SAT questions seem to run together. In addition, I think I took at least 8 practice tests on my own before taking the SATs again last year. Received a 1520 then and decided to stop. Another friend of mine scored 1260 his first time and then after the same course scored 1460, and then took the test a third time and scored a 1510. I tend to think the SATs are just a test on taking the SAT test.. just practice practice practice..
