Learn how to catch the ball
I was in the same situation last year. Only I fractured my pinky playing basketball. I was down by the post and someone passed me the ball...the ball "slapped" my fingers hard enough to break my pinkey (which was slanted upwards about 45 degrees), and the ring and middle fingers were sore/jammed. I went to the hospital, waited about 3 hours, had my fingers X-Rayed; however the orthopedic was not there that night, so I had to wait until the next morning to get any real stuff done (note: they did put a aluminum cast on it). Anyway, I went to the orthopedic, he gave me 3 localized shots, pulled my finger a bit (I should've farted, that would've been funny). The bone still needed to be straightened out more precisely, so he moved it around more vigorously (by this time the medicine wore off a bit). The bone this time was pretty much good, but it would grow back a little crooked. I couldn't handle that, so I decided the best thing to do was to have a pin drilled into the pinkey...which was done that night.
After the cast comes off, try wearing some tape to keep your fingers together when playing basketball. Unless you want to keep paying $500 to treat your finger each time you break it.
