Ouch. Elsa goes Bankrupt, nVidia loses European market for now.

Heres the quote from Xbitlabs

<< Yesterday the German ELSA announced its bankruptcy and the court of Aahen appointed supervisors to put up the company?s assets, intellectual property and storage stocks for sale. This happened after ELSA had failed to find common language with the creditors to whom the company owned 38 millions euro, neither had it found a new investor.

ELSA still has some interesting things that may attract many graphics chip and card makers. First of all, ELSA was the only manufacturer of professional graphics cards based on Quadro series from NVIDIA. Then, ELSA has a number of unique innovations in drivers for graphics cards of this class. Secondly, ELSA is a widely promoted brand in Europe and it can be of interest for American companies that want to enter the European market.

At the same time, the story with ELSA may cause serious troubles to NVIDIA. Lately the market of graphics cards based on NVIDIA chips has dramatically shrunk. First it was Hercules to stop cooperating with NVIDIA, now it is ELSA leaving the market, while both the companies have a large dealer network in Europe. All this has forced NVIDIA to promote its American partners in Europe. First of all, it is the U.S. sales leader, Visiontek, which is most likely to buy ELSA now. In the beginning of March we?ll learn who will continue manufacturing professional graphics cards based on Quadro chips.

This sucks for nVidia, especially with the Quadro series.

This thread doesn't need locked. It doesn't hurt posting something twice. First it was Hercules, and now Elsa. As long as Gainward doesn't stop making nvidia cards, I'll be fine.

Yeah, this is likely going to hurt nVidia's prospects in Europe, just because of Elsa though. Remember that nVidia has been pushing VisionTek to enter the European market for weeks now, so who knows how that'll work out.

Also, you should probably keep in mind that ATi entered the European market very recently, like just last month (Hercules deal). So it's not like ATi or nVidia can do much battle in Europe to begin with...

This will severely damage nVidia's chances in the high end sector. The high end 3D rendering market is typically very slow to accept newcomers, the only reason nVidia managed to get any foot hold in the market in the first place was because of the backing of Elsa which was an established player in that industry. The Quadro/Synergy line will be really hurt by this.
nVidia will also be immensely hurt by losing the very experienced and talented driver team that Elsa had put together to work on the Quadro's drivers, as nVidia's own drivers for the Quadro still have very significant performance and quality issues.
And none of nVidia's remaining partners are at all established in the high end sector.

This will undoubtedly be a huge benefit to ATi for their FireGL, and 3DLabs in their WildCat brand.

I think ATI has been in europe a lot longer than the Herc deeal. They have been seeing cards there for years I think (Just he herc dedAl gives them more exposure).

Cheers,

Yeah, sorry, I meant to say that ATi didn't have much exposure in Europe until the Herc deal last month.

curiously, i've seen hercules radeon 8500 cards advertised, but they're not listed on the product page of hercules' website - what's up with that?

(at leas they were last I checked)

It's rediculous how it's all or none anymore with so many well known names dying over the last few years.

I'm glad though, like someone else mentioned, I don't want to see Nvidia become a monopoly. I like to have several choices when it comes to graphics, especially since I do 2d motion video editing and couldn't care less about 3D.

I currently use Matrox, but I won't buy them again because they haven't even made an effort to keep up. I've never liked the 2D characteristics of Nvidia based cards. I guess it's ATI (the other monopoly to be!)
